Unzip Your Skinny Jeans

January 21st, 2012 by Sara Cornell

Skinny jeans can be every fashionista’s nemesis.  You have to find just the right pair that hugs but doesn’t strangle, flatters but doesn’t draw too much unwanted attention, lifts your butt without looking like you are wearing shapers and then puddles perfectly atop whatever range of footwear is your choice of the day.  A pretty tall order.  But when you find that holy grail of jeans, look out!  They can be your best friend!

A new trend in skinnies the the ankle zip, which gives you some flexibility in your styling options when the full on skinny thing just isn’t working.  I love this (super pricey) pair from Lot78:

Lot78 Ankle Zip Jeans $315 at Net-A-Porter

Zipped at the ankle they are your expected go-to skinnies, but unzipped they turn into a completely different pair of pants with totally different styling options:

For a more economical and creative look, you can try adding a little ankle cleavage to your existing skinny jeans, a la Leandra Medine of  Man Repeller.  Back in November she put her own twist on unzipped skinny jean ankle cleavage using this image as inspiration:

and came up with this awesome look:

Cool, right!  And totally unexpected.  The trick is using skinny jeans that are too long so you have nice draping over the top of the foot.  I tried this with a pair of $20 jeans from Old Navy and the concept worked well, but the pants weren’t long enough to get the look I wanted.  I have my eye open for a pair of extra long skinnies (I just can’t emotionally commit to cutting my favorite-perfect-awesome pair!) so I can try again for a similar look.

The added bonus of unzipped skinnies or flaunting some ankle cleavage is that it makes your legs look leaner and a draws the eye away from the widest point of the hip.

So go make friends with your skinny jeans and see what kind of unexpected styling tricks or options you can come up with.

Trend Alert: Pastel Skinny Jeans

Cameron Diaz is the picture of casual cool in these absolutely adorable coral skinny jeans from Rag & Bone. The thought of coral colored jeans may not thrill everyone but we love her clean look, complete with neutral blazer and sandals.

Leann Rimes looks uber cool in her M2F mint green skinnies and Alexander McQueen scarf. Her jeans aren’t overbearing but they certainly draw the eye. Survey says? We love ‘em.

Want to snatch their looks or make your own? Well, never fear… many denim manufacturers are keeping up with the trends and offer us a great selection for our everyday.

I am always excited about the latest and greatest in accessories so you can imagine what kind of dreamy-eyedness that came over me when I saw the newest necklace launched by Twisted Silver. This is such a rad necklace that screams edgy and chic but I can also see this being such a versatile piece, something I can wear with so much… I mean, one of my favorite things to do is work an outfit around a stellar piece of jewelry. Here, let me show you what I mean.

“Out with My Girls” outfit? Where’s my Tokyo Necklace?

Skinny Jeans, American Eagle, RVCA Supernova Shirt, Dog Funk,  Eldra Heels by Jessica Simpson

“Casual Dinner with Your Man” outfit?

Vince Camuto Coco, Zappos, Cable Knit Cardigan, Old Navy, Halogen Textured Skirt, Nordstrom

“Just Gotta Run Errands” Outfit?

Mitchell and Ness NFL Shirt, NFL.com, Skinny Jeans, American Eagle, Nike Free Hyper, 6pm.com, Shawl Collar Dream Cardigan, Eddie Bauer

You see what I’m saying? The possibilities seem to be endless. If you let a piece of jewelry inspire you, you can see how everything in your closet might scream “pick me, pick me!”. Check out the entire Twisted Silver collection for inspiration in the form of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and more… you won’t be sorry!

Skinny Jeans That Really Make You Look Skinny!

December 1st, 2010 by Sara Cornell

If you are like me you overdid it at the Thanksgiving table, and probably overdid it with the leftovers, and then maybe, like me, overdid it with the group candy dish at work today.  All this has left me with a wardrobe challenge; everything in my closet is snug and makes me look fat.  Thank heaven for my Hello! Skinny Jeans.  These are the BEST jeans ever!  They are thigh slimming, stomach flattening, buttock shaping, leg lengthening, stretch denim jeans.   Seriously.  I read about them in Lucky Magazine earlier this year and was skeptical, but Lucky was offering one of their Lucky Deals so I decided to try a pair.  Talk about go-to jeans.  And they have saved me this week!  I bought the Night Wash and they are perfect to dress up or down; I can wear them to the office with a jacket or with a T-shirt to look pulled together doing errands.

Hello! SkinnyJeans® are made from classic denim but with a high nylon/elastane content. This denim is made exclusively for SkinnyJeans®. This gives them a ‘beefy’ strength to hold you in (no wimpy, gummy stretch here) and creates ‘Memory’—it sucks everything in and never sags, bags or grows by the end of the day. (You will not have to wash them every time you wear them!)

The thighs are very ‘scooped’ out which drastically separates and slims the thighs and pushes the butt out creating a shapely silhouette.  The fading and shading pattern on the jeans creates an optical illusion front and back to slim the leg.  Additionally, barely-visible whiskering above the natural leg break tricks the eye into seeing longer legs (as opposed to most jeans with patterns that make the hips look wider and thighs bigger!  The cut is a ‘barely bootcut’ – this balances the shape of the thigh to the ankle making your thighs appear as slim as possible and legs as long as possible.I highly recommend Hello! Skinny Jeans.  They come in a variety of washes and 3 lengths of inseams. Prices start at $149. You can purchase Hello! Skinny Jeans at skinnyjeans.com

Fall 2010 Fashion Trends: Jeggings, Leggings and Denim Stretchy Pants

August 27th, 2010 by The Fashionable Housewife

I wasn’t a fan of skinny jeans at first, but came to love them and embrace the style as I found ways to make it work on my body.

The denim skinny jeans have evolved into a type of legging that are now called “Jeggings” and can be found in most stores for less than $50! They are a super soft and stretchy version of skinny jeans that can be worn like jeans or like leggings, giving you more versatility.

(When I’m not pregnant!) I like wearing mine with tunics, blouses, long sweaters and blousey tops. I found a fabulous pair of Super Stretch Slim Leg Maternity Jeans that I wore a lot during the first and second trimester of my pregnancy.

I can’t wait till I can get back into all my non-maternity pants, including my favorite jeggings!

If you don’t have a pair, you really should try them. Don’t be afraid!! You don’t have to worry about showing off your thighs… just pair them with a top the hits mid thigh and wear a belt at the waist to accentuate the hourglass illusion.

Denim Leggings / Jeggings for Under $50!

Will you try jeggings or denim leggings? What will you wear them with?

Fall 2010 Fashion Trends: Go Boho

August 23rd, 2010 by Lucie Amberg

Boho chic has been trending for a couple of seasons, and it’s back in force for Fall. It’s kind of the airy yin to the military trend’s no-nonsense yang.  So if the crisp, sharp aesthetic of that trend turns you off, you can put together artsy boho ensembles and still be totally 2010.

The key elements of this trend:

  • Patterns– particularly florals, Asian-inspired prints, and paisleys
  • Loose silhouettes– think kimono sleeves, tunics, dolman tops, etc.
  • Soft fabrics like chiffon and crocheted lace (worn casually)
  • Accessorizing with scarves and hats
  • Lots of denim (and not just as jeans)

And a couple of things to remember:

  • This look had its first heyday during the 70s (think Kate Hudson in Almost Famous and Ali Macgraw in Love Story).  So feel free to incorporate the classics of hippie style, including bell bottoms (since that uber-flattering silhouette is trending again) and platform shoes.  As always, just remember to keep it restrained, not costumey.
  • Yay!  It’s a trend that’s definitely supposed to be fun.  Experiment with fringe, colored shoes, embroidered accents– a lot of things you might normally avoid.  Keep in mind that a little goes a long way, and you should have no trouble putting together a boho chic ensemble.

I put together some quick outfit ideas via Polyvore.

Restricted Paratrooper Boots at Piperlime.com, American Rag Ruffle Denim Shirtdress at Macys.com, Enamel Bangles at Target.com, Studio 36 Metallic Paisley Wrap at Sears.com, Lauren by Ralph Lauren Tapered Hoop Earrings at Nordstrom.com, and Gap Coated canvas tote at Gap.com.

And if you like this trend– but not enough to go looking for new outfits –consider using accessories to give your wardrobe basics a boho flair.

YMI Extreme Jeans Stretch Denim Leggings

February 11th, 2010 by The Fashionable Housewife

Skinny jeans may not be right for everyone, especially for those of us with pear shaped bodies and thicker thighs. Thank goodness for denim leggings which are gaining popularity quickly and perfect for all body shapes.

You might not want to show off your thighs in all their glory, but you’ll be surprised how great they look with long tops and sweaters as well as tunics, dresses and blouses for you braver folks.

My favorite denim leggings are YMI Extreme Jeans which are more like jeans, then leggings (jeggings).

The Extreme Jeans have an incredible amount of stretch. I received a pair in a size 5 to review and was terrified to try them on. They looked like 00 jeans made for a stick figure model! To my surprise, they slipped on like your favorite comfy leggings and buttoned without effort.

You can get the YMI Extreme Jeans for 40% off for the next 48 hours ONLY with coupon code YMIFHW
