Shoes to Inspire a Transition to Spring

February 6th, 2012 by Sara Cornell

Here we are in the middle of the winter that isn’t, and all I can think about is my spring wardrobe.  I’m having visions of flowers and and bright prints and Missoni style zig zags.  I think I’m getting inspired by all the green things than keep popping up in my yard as we alternate sub freezing days with balmy ones with temps in the 50s.  Well, at least some things are consistent, like seasonal style transitions.  So if you want to get a jump start on your spring style, because it will officially be spring before we know it, here are some of my favorite shoes, available at DSW.com.

Steve Madden Kia Sandal $69.95 at DSW

I love the bright print on this platform sandal.  The red and beige colors would work with a lot of different neutrals, and would look really cute with a bright circle skirt.

Madden Girl Crafty Wedge $44.95 at DSW

I love the tropical theme of this shoe, which is just begging to be paired with a pair of white skinny jeans and a sheer black top.

Madden Girl Mellony Zig Zag $44.95 at DSW

These pumps remind me of Missoni without the designer price tag.  I’d wear these with a pair of cuffed boyfriend jeans and a grey T with an orange or navy cardigan.

All of these styles and more are available at DSW.com, or head to your local DSW for a huge selection of trendy spring footwear.

“What’s Your Nude?”

February 1st, 2012 by Sara Cornell

The following is a great article that appeared today on Fashionista.com.  It was written by the lovely Hayley Phalen, and brings to light an important aspect of our culture and society.  A close friend of mine is a teacher in an inner city school, and has told me many stories of children frustrated and confused because band aids only come in tones that match the skin of white people.  This article is yet another chapter in a book that needs to be updated.  We welcome your comments and insights…

“Nude” bras and underwear usually come in colors like beige, blush and ivory. Except, as we all know, there’s a huge portion of the population whose birthday suits don’t come anywhere close to those colors. So what gives?

Psychologist (and African-American consumer) Tara Raines says it’s been a problem for years and she–along with hundreds of other consumers–have finally had enough. Enter the “What’s Your Nude” campaign–a movement, launched today, that asks women and men of all different colors to reach out to bra manufacturers or bra retailers, become a fan of the “What’s Your Nude” Facebook page, and follow the campaign on Twitter in an effort to promote greater diversity in bra colors.

Raines says the last straw came while shopping–where else–at lingerie behemothVictoria’s Secret. “I decided to enjoy some of the fruit of the Victoria’s Secret semiannual sale. I realized the ‘every day’ bras I wanted were only in black, white, and ‘nude’ and I wanted one in BROWN!” she wrote to us in an email. “They only had very few styles in brown but innumerable styles in ‘nude.’ I got pissed.” After discussing her experience with family members and friends and finding out that for more than 30 years, many of them had been dying their bras brown, Raines decided the industry needed to change. The “What’s Your Nude” campaign was born.

“Women of color have tremendous spending power in the U.S. and it’s absurd to think that in 2012 we are essentially disenfranchised when they shop for lingerie,” Raines added. “It’s my hope that this campaign will drive not only awareness, but swift action by bra makers.”

But why make all this fuss over a bra, you ask? Because, as Raines makes clear, it goes a lot deeper than just being able to find suitable undergarments. “As a group, [women of color] are still fighting to have our beauty recognized,” she said. “Part of feeling beautiful is looking like ourselves.” And that means being able to find brown bras that suitably match their skin color–something that many white women probably take for granted.

“I feel it is imperative that women of color be represented in bras, panties, and lingerie. We shouldn’t have to go to a specialty store, on a goose chase, or spend a fortune to get a bra that looks more like us,” Raines wrote. “Being ignored is a slight. Every time I shop for bras, I am subjected to a micro-aggression.”

And it’s not just the undergarment industry that’s the problem–Raines says that products from SPANX to high-heeled shoes need to start reflecting the diverse skin colors that exist in this country. “Since starting this [campaign] a NUMBER of people have emailed me about bandaids!” Raines added.

She added that hundreds of women had reached out to her and to the “What’s Your Nude” campaign to “share their struggles and their ‘secrets’ for tackling the hurdles of not having brown bras available.” So far the campaign has 1,959 fans on Facebook–and counting.

“I hope that through this campaign people will become mindful of women of color both in lingerie and fashion in general,” Raines told us. “I would like to walk into the store of my choice and find multiple sizes, styles, and options of brown bras. I would like to for young girls to be able to buy brown training bras. I would like to be the color brown to be as common to lingerie as ‘nude.’”

Fuzzy Boots: Crocs CozyCrocs Fuzz Booties

Deliciously fuzzy, sensuously soft and terribly cute. These are without a doubt the warmest furry boots you’ll ever find.

They come in 2 colors – Stucco with Espresso trim and Brown with Black trim. I received the Stucco ones directly from Crocs to review. I can report that they are just beautiful!

I’ve been wearing these almost non stop since I received them. I’m in love! At first, I was afraid that I would look like I was walking around with long haired guinea pig’s strapped to my feet… Once I got them on though with some skinny jeans a cute sweater, they didn’t look over-the-top at all.

The fit is roomy and comfortable. If you wear a half size usually, I recommend buying the next whole size up. I usually wear 7.5, but I always get size 8 in Crocs for a perfect fit.

These boots really feel like slippers. If you’re looking for a supportive, resilient boot to wear whilst shoveling 5 feet of Vermont snow, then these might not be the best choice for you…. But for everyone else, these are a MUST-HAVE.

I have wide, athletic calves and these are roomy on me. Of all the boots I own (at least 25 pairs) these are the most roomy and I can wear them with any pants, not just slim or skinny ones. You could tuck fleece lined jeans into these and still be comfortable.

I also love that they are super, super lightweight. They are without a doubt THE most warm winter boots I own.

BUY THEM!

Unzip Your Skinny Jeans

January 21st, 2012 by Sara Cornell

Skinny jeans can be every fashionista’s nemesis.  You have to find just the right pair that hugs but doesn’t strangle, flatters but doesn’t draw too much unwanted attention, lifts your butt without looking like you are wearing shapers and then puddles perfectly atop whatever range of footwear is your choice of the day.  A pretty tall order.  But when you find that holy grail of jeans, look out!  They can be your best friend!

A new trend in skinnies the the ankle zip, which gives you some flexibility in your styling options when the full on skinny thing just isn’t working.  I love this (super pricey) pair from Lot78:

Lot78 Ankle Zip Jeans $315 at Net-A-Porter

Zipped at the ankle they are your expected go-to skinnies, but unzipped they turn into a completely different pair of pants with totally different styling options:

For a more economical and creative look, you can try adding a little ankle cleavage to your existing skinny jeans, a la Leandra Medine of  Man Repeller.  Back in November she put her own twist on unzipped skinny jean ankle cleavage using this image as inspiration:

and came up with this awesome look:

Cool, right!  And totally unexpected.  The trick is using skinny jeans that are too long so you have nice draping over the top of the foot.  I tried this with a pair of $20 jeans from Old Navy and the concept worked well, but the pants weren’t long enough to get the look I wanted.  I have my eye open for a pair of extra long skinnies (I just can’t emotionally commit to cutting my favorite-perfect-awesome pair!) so I can try again for a similar look.

The added bonus of unzipped skinnies or flaunting some ankle cleavage is that it makes your legs look leaner and a draws the eye away from the widest point of the hip.

So go make friends with your skinny jeans and see what kind of unexpected styling tricks or options you can come up with.

Crocs Dawson Boots Kids Comfortable Shoes Review

Crocs Dawson Boot (Children's) - Bubblegum/Chocolate

Crocs Dawson Boot Kids Shoes

Got these for my son (15 months old) in a size 5, in black. He’s been wearing them inside and outside for weeks. I like them because he can’t take them off easily, they keep his feet warm and they appear to be very comfortable. He has a few pairs of shoes/boots that he won’t keep on his feet and he visibly complains about… “Off! Off!” he says to me and points at his feet. He never seems to have an issue with these boots though.

They are super freaking cute, look great with all his pants and are easy to put on with zippers on the inside. (No laces! Yay!) They are also lightweight and easy for him to walk in. I also like they they are supportive for his feet and ankles. How can you go wrong?

I love paying full retail price!  I want instant gratification, and if it means buying NOW rather than waiting for something to go on sale, I say go for it!  Just kidding.  I love saving money as much as the next person, but I also have a soft spot for beautiful designer duds.  I mean who doesn’t.  (Probably a lot of people, but I doubt they’re reading this blog…anyway…)  I was playing the internet is my closet game and came across the following pieces on Shop Style:

Giulietta Polka Dot Silk Crepe Tee $475 at Net-A-Porter

L'Agence perforated Leather Mini Skirt $575 at Barney's

Giuseppe Zanotti Double Platform Booties $795 at Barney's

Add that all up and you’ve got a $1,845 smashingly good-looking outfit.  So what if it’s a mortgage payment, it’s important to look good so you can feel good, right?  But wait…do my eyes deceive me:

StyleMint Rush Polka Dot Tee $29.99

Vegan Leather Skirt $148 at Free People

Michelle Suede Bootie $79.98 at ShoeMint

Almost the exact same outfit for A LOT less!  Like $1,587 LESS!  Now that’s what I call bargain shopping.  And the best part is, you can get the entire look on-line, so you don’t have to leave the comfort of your house on this cold and dreary winter day to get instant gratification!
