TakeAwayWhite Deodorant Smudge Remover

October 12th, 2010 by Sara Cornell

How many times have you ruined your little black dress with deodorant smudges?  It’s so frustrating, and those stains are hard to remove, especially when you are trying to make a swift and graceful exit to an event.  TakeAwayWhite to the rescue!

Takeawaywhite is an eco-friendly, dry, reusable oval foam pad for men, women and teens, deigned to remove deodorant smudge marks from almost all fabric clothing.  An unsightly deodorant mark is annoying and almost always happens when you are in a hurry.

You’ve seen it – you take a last look in the mirror and there it is – an unsightly smudge mark of powder residue on your fabulous outfit!  So annoying and such a hassle, until now…

Takeawaywhite lifts the white deodorant residue powder (the stuff that gets deposited on clothing that is pulled over the head and down the torso while getting dressed) from almost all fabrics.  However, it is not a stain remover and will not remove grease.  To use, simply smooth the affected fabric across your body, swipe the smudge with takeawaywhite 2 to 5 times, and presto, you’re ready to go.

This handy item is available in regular and travel sizes, and retails for $4.95.  You can purchase it on-line at www.takeawaywhite.com.

Review: Speed Stick with Stainguard

August 17th, 2010 by Lucie Amberg

I recently received the new Lady Speed Stick with Stainguard for review.  Mr. Handsome Husband received the men’s version and sweetly agreed to roadtest it for me.

So what’s the story with this new Speed Stick?  Here’s the claim:

The new Lady Speed Stick Stainguard and Men’s Speed Stick with Stainguard feature patent-pending Stain Defense™ technology that keeps more antiperspirant on your skin, helping to fight the appearance of yellow stains on your favorite white T.

But does it work?

Well, it’s hard to say after short-term use.  To really know how well the Stainguard works, we’d have to carefully compare wear over a long period of time.  A few things we were able to determine, though:

Overall, my husband liked his.  He’s accustomed to using a gel, so he liked that less Speed Stick came off on his undershirt.  It’s important to note that a noticeable bit of this product still rubbed off on his shirt, though, so it wasn’t a perfect solution.  However, in general he felt the Speed Stick was more adherent.  In fact, he found that he needed to use soap to remove it in the shower since it really won’t wear or wash off on its own.  That could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your perspective, but it supports Speed Stick’s claim that the formulation “keeps more antiperspirant on your skin.”

I found the Lady Speed Stick to be pretty successful in staying put.  I wear a lot of black, and always have issues with white deodorant marks showing up where they shouldn’t.  Lady Speed Stick outperformed most deodorants I’ve tried in that respect.  I still noticed some white residue on the seams of black tops (right under my arms), but it was limited– a big improvement for me.

I actually sweat very little naturally, but even so I’d say this product is a very effective antiperspirant.  I particularly noticed that when wearing Lady Spead Stick during my afternoon runs, I barely worked up a sweat.  Once again, that’s good or bad depending on your perspective.  When I’m exercising, I really like to work up a good sweat (and somehow don’t feel my workout is as fulfilling without it).  If you live in a very humid climate, though, or wear a corporate work wardrobe, or just perspire a lot, you might really be into this level of antiperspirant.

The male and female varieties are each available in two scents.  For men:

  • Fresh-  Traditionally masculine and slightly detergent.  Lighter and less musky than many men’s deodorants.  My husband preferred this scent.
  • Clean-  Very light, less traditional and slightly sweet.  I thought it was really nice.

And for women:

  • Daringly Fresh-  Feminine, sweet, and faintly floral.
  • Powder Fresh-  Very baby powder with soapy undertones.

Lady Speed Stick with Stainguard and Speed Stick with Stainguard are available at Drugstore.com and retailers nationwide.

What Not To Wear: Fashion Week Faux Pas

February 19th, 2010 by The Fashionable Housewife

No, it’s not the dress itself or the fact that it’s see through…

One thing you don’t rock during Fashion Week, no matter who you are, is big pit stains. According to Fox News: “It’s the only part of former Olympic gold medalist Oksana Baiul’s dress that you can’t see through!!”

This is a major fashion faux pas no matter where you are, including (and especially) during Fashion Week.

Such embarrassment could have easily been avoided had she or her stylist heard about Secret Clinical Strength Anti-Perspirant Deodorant.

Secret Clinical Strength Waterproof Antiperspirant Deodorant gives you prescription strength wetness protection without a prescription. It has a strong scent, but it’s waterproof and is pretty much guaranteed to stop you from sweating or smelling.

While I don’t personally use antiperspirant deodorant like this because of the dangers of aluminum, I would use this on a special occasion like Fashion Week or perhaps a wedding, not on a regular basis.

If you have a severe sweating problem, like Ms. Baiul, you might want to consider using Secret Clinical Strength Anti-Perspirant Deodorant for those important occasions and events.

Get it at Drugstore.com, WalMart.com or Amazon.com.

Stop Using Underarm Deodorants Until You Read This

February 16th, 2010 by The Fashionable Housewife

I get Mercola’s Newsletter, (The World’s Most Popular Natural Health Newsletter) in my inbox every morning. This morning, a particular headline caught my attention and I knew I had to share it with you ladies!!

Some of the most popular natural deodorants are the “crystal” deodorant stones and sprays. But most people don’t know that these crystal deodorant products contain aluminum.

The crystal deodorant stones are made from alum. The most widely used form of alum used in the personal care industry is potassium alum. The full chemical name of potassium alum is potassium aluminum sulfate.

The reason that most people try to avoid aluminum in deodorant is because of its possible link to Alzheimer’s disease. There is some strong evidence of a link — for instance, in 1988 a truck driver accidentally dumped 20 tons of aluminum sulfate in to a town’s drinking water.

Now, over 20 years later, they are finding a higher incidence of Alzheimer’s in the people of this town.

Incidentally, the article linked below notes that, “many doctors such as popular web guru and natural health expert Dr. Mercola suggest avoiding aluminum as much as possible.”

Source: Bubble and Bee January 21, 2010

Let’s get this straight. Even though aluminum is widely distributed in the earth’s crust, it is NOT needed in ANY amounts in your body. All evidence to date points to aluminum as a poison that serves no beneficial role in your body and should be avoided.

Aluminum is widely recognized as a neurotoxin, which has been found in increased concentrations in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Unfortunately, if you use antiperspirants or some deodorants, you are most likely exposing yourself to aluminum.

Aluminum salts can account for 25 percent of the volume of some antiperspirants.

A review of the common sources of aluminum exposure for humans found that antiperspirant use can significantly increase the amount of aluminum absorbed by your body. According to the review, after a single underarm application of antiperspirant, about .012 percent of the aluminum may be absorbed.

Multiply this by one or more times a day for a lifetime and you can have a massive exposure to aluminum — a poison that is not meant to be in your body.

Antiperspirants work by clogging, closing, or blocking the pores that release sweat under your arms — with the active ingredient being aluminum. Not only does this block one of your body’s routes for detoxification (releasing toxins via your underarm sweat), but it raises concerns about where these heavy metals are going once you roll them (or spray them) on.

In some cases, it is clear that they may be wreaking havoc directly on your brain. In 1988, for instance, a truck driver accidentally poured 20 tons of aluminum sulphate into a tank containing drinking water.

Some 20,000 people in the village of Camelford were exposed to the chemical for several weeks, and then went on to develop a rare form of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, along with showing the presence of high levels of aluminum in their tissues.

Most Effective Deodorant And Summer Tips for Beautiful Arms

August 19th, 2009 by The Fashionable Housewife

underarmsIt’s summertime and we all know what that means. Lots of sleeveless styles! If you worry about your arms or your underarms, here are a couple helpful tips…

  • Always include arm toning exercises like bicep or tricep curls in your workout routine.
  • Focus on your arms at least 3 times a week.
  • Don’t leave home without using deodorant!

No matter how beautiful and toned your arms are, they need to be dry and fresh so you can feel your best! Summertime really is the most important time to use deodorant because you are out in the sun, sweating more, and your underarms are exposed to everyone when you are wearing tank tops and summer dresses.

In the winter, we get lazy and don’t shave our underarms as often. Did you know that we have hair in our armpits to act as a natural deodorant? Armpit hair naturally wicks moisture away from the skin, which aids in keeping the skin dry enough to prevent odor producing bacteria. Yeah, and you thought armpit hair was there just to annoy you…

So if you shave off your “natural deodorant”, then you have to put an antiperspirant on to do the job the hair was doing; reduce moisture and mask the odor of the bacteria that now has a place to live and grow. So the theory that having shaved armpit hair reduces body odor is invalid. What do you think about that?!

Well, even I have to admit that running around with a hairy bush under each armpit isn’t very flattering, not to mention that it’s socially unacceptable. For most of us deodorant is a must, and most of us need antiperspirant deodorant to get through our busy days.

If you need extra protection for those hot summer days, Secret now has a Clinical Strength Anti-Perspirant Deodorant for only $7.99. It’s the most effective deodorant you can get without a prescription.

Not everyone needs such heavy duty protection. If you have normal sweating and underarm odor issues, try Secret’s new Flawless Anti-Perspirant Deodorant, Crystal Clear Gel. It has less aluminum, making it a safer choice if you’re worried about the chemicals. Aluminum is a common ingredient in antiperspirant deodorant and has been linked to Alzheimer’s and brain disorders and is a possible risk factor for breast cancer as well. Be sure to research more about this if you are concerned.

Secret Flawless Anti-Perspirant Deodorant, Crystal Clear Gelcomes in yummy scents like Clearly Tropical, Clean Powder, Refreshing Floral, and Unscented. It retails for $5.99 and can be purchased at retailers nationwide as well as online at Drugstore.com

My favorite Secret product is Secret Fresh Effects Antiperspirant Deodorant, Invisible Solid in Cucumber Aloe. It has a light, yummy scent and it gives excellent protection. I only use an antiperspirant like this on RARE occasions when I know I’m going to be overheating, sweating and won’t have access to wash my underarms before killing those around me with the stench!

While I don’t avoid using antiperspirant deodorant completely, I still try to regulate the amount of times I use it in a year because of the known dangers of aluminum and the link to Alzheimers.

Be sure to read my article – Your Deodorant – Is There Danger Lurking Within? I give recommendations on the best and most effective deodorants that are aluminum free as well as more information on the dangers of using traditional antiperspirant deodorants.

Must Haves For Your Summer Bag!

July 10th, 2009 by Amanda Davis

Got a call from a girlfriend to go out to a trendy bar for drinks but totally didn’t plan for it? Your man calls you to tell you he got a baby sitter and is taking you out right after work? In a spot, every girl should have the tools to put together a face for a night on the town or in the very least have what’s needed to just get by. Take a look at what is in my bag for a bind taking into consideration that I don’t carry small bags (wink wink)…

Bag

Your skin’s health is precious; everyone will say so. For an impromptu day in the sun or for regular use, protect your skin using the newest from Neutrogena. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock Lotion, SPF 85, in stores and online $11.99 offers protection from harmful UV rays as well as offering a lightweight option for those like me that don’t like the heavy feel of normal sunblocks.

Eeeeeek! Need lipstick but don’t have any with you? Moisture and tint in one is the best option for keeping your lips healthy as well as offering a quick option to refresh your morning makeup.  You can use it during the day without looking trashy and you can use it at night to add that little somethin’ somethin’. Try  C.O. Bigelow Vitamin Mentha Lip Balm, Baby Pink Mint, Bath and Body Works in store and online, $7.50.

Even though it is summer, I still cannot seem to keep my hands hydrated at all times . I use and keep with me Burt’s Bees Shea Butter Hand Creme, available in stores and online, $12.99 to keep my hands soft and smelling sweet. I can’t hold hands with my man without it! Try other Burt’s Bees products as well. They are simply lovely, of good quality and all have pretty great natural fragrances.

A quick switch from day to evening can be as simple as a great mascara. I use and adore  Maybelline Colossial Volume Express Mascara, in glam black, in stores and online, $6.99, because I have movie star eyelashes in a minute flat…. and to any outsider I look like I planned my make-up in advance.

Never fear for freshening your complexion either… I always carry Almay Clear Complexion Pressed Powder, in stores and online, $12.99 because it is perfect for concealing those pesky blemishes that were hard enough to cover when you left in the morning. It keeps me feeling a little better about my face even if my face is fighting me tooth and nail.

Dove Go Fresh Body Mist, in stores and online, $4.49 is perfect for a refreshing scent that is not overwhelming, comes in a small travel sizish spray and acts as a deodorant as well. After a day in the office, chasing the kids, or just simply sweating, this is perfect for a gal on the go!

scunci Salon Bobby Pins are a necessity for me and pretty much any girl I know who has hair on her head. They are super affordable and now come in a really convenient travel case so that you don’t end up with a purse full of bobby pins floating around. I have been caught in a bad hair day that could only be tamed by a trip to the bathroom with my bobby pins and tap water. Available in stores and online, $2.99

Your Deodorant – Is There Danger Lurking Within?

October 22nd, 2008 by The Fashionable Housewife

I personally haven’t used antiperspirant for years because I heard about the dangers of using it while pregnant and breastfeeding. The harmful ingredients in antiperspirants actually clog up your sweat pores. Not exactly healthy!

I mean, where’s the logic here? The FDA even considers antiperspirants a drug because they “affect the function of the body”. It should probably require a prescription! Okay, don’t yell at me, I know you love your deodorant, but think about how most brand-name deodorants have as many chemicals and preservatives in it as yout toilet cleaner… And your putting on your skin… next to your breasts… Not cool!!!

Check this out:

You just got out of the shower and reached for your favorite deodorant. You like it because it smells nice and it keeps your underarms dry and odor free. You’ve used it for a long time. But did you ever read the ingredients on the label and wonder about the safety of the almost unpronounceable chemicals listed in the too tiny to read print?

If not, you’re like most people. You don’t expect to find products on store shelves that contain harmful ingredients. But beware. The ingredients in many deodorant products could endanger your health.

Certainly, you’ve heard in the news recently about the possible association with deodorants and breast cancer. Maybe you’ve even heard about the possibility that aluminum in deodorants may contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. And you may or may not know about ingredients which act like estrogen and can upset your hormonal balance.

Perhaps you’ve heard all these things and just shrugged them off. After all how could companies sell these products if they’re not safe? The manufacturers certainly must test the ingredients and the products before they put them on the market, right? Well, not exactly! The law does not require manufacturers to test their products for safety. In fact, except for colors and a few banned ingredients, manufacturers can use any raw material they want as an ingredient in your deodorant. Most of the ingredients used in deodorant and other personal care products have not been fully tested. Many have never been tested at all.

The industry, in an attempt to make it look like it’s acting in the interest of consumer safety, formed the Cosmetic Ingredient Review in 1976 to evaluate the safety of ingredients used in cosmetics and personal care products. However, in the 29 years up to June 2005, they performed safety assessments on only about 10% of the ingredients allowed in cosmetic and personal care products, including deodorants, and never evaluated one third of the 50 most commonly used ingredients.

But, you might add, the FDA wouldn’t allow companies to sell unsafe products to the public, right? Well, in theory! While the FDA urges manufacturers to conduct the tests necessary to substantiate the safety of their products, the law does not require manufacturers to test their products for safety. The FDA doesn’t approve deodorants and antiperspirants or any other cosmetic or skin care products before they reach the marketplace. The FDA can only have a product removed from the market if they can prove it harmful in a court of law.

So, what does this mean for you? Does it mean you should stop using deodorant? What can you do to protect yourself? Well, you have several options. You can discover the secret to reading ingredient labels and ascertaining ingredient safety, making yourself a master of choosing products without harmful ingredients. You can ask someone who knows to recommend a safe deodorant or antiperspirant. Or you can get adventuresome and learn how to make your own.

Now, it really isn’t necessary to go to the time and trouble of making your own, unless of course you want to. You can find healthy deodorant products in stores or online if you know how to read labels and determine ingredient safety. Once an almost impossible task for the average person, but no more. Now you can easily master the art of label reading and interpretation with the book, Dying To Look Good. It gives you the keys to deciphering the safety of the ingredients on the label of your deodorant and other personal care products as well as providing names of healthy products and where you can buy them.

To discover which ingredients to watch out for in your deodorant and to find out my top recommendation for a healthy deodorant, read “Deodorant – Top 7 Ingredients To Avoid

So what’s a girl to do? Don’t worry, we’re not telling you to quit deodorant all together! There are many natural alternatives that actually work!

Over the past 2 or 3 years, I’ve tried at least half a dozen natural alternatives to conventional deodorants that contain Aluminum Zirconium. Some work and some don’t. Lucky for me, (and those around me) I found a few that get the job done.

Here’s my favorites, in order…

icon

Origins Totally Pure Deodorant

What: Totally Pure Deodorant
icon

This is my favorite so far. It smells great, easy to apply spray, and… it works! My favorite part is the scent… Really invigorating!

It’s a big bottle so would probably last at least 6-8 months using it every day. Plus the spray is nice to apply and won’t show up on your clothes, making it great for the fashionable woman.

The best part, it’s totally pure. That’s why they call it Totally Pure Deodorant
icon. The list of ingredients will amaze you!

Try it, you’ll like it…

Price: $15.00

Discounts: Free Shipping on any Origins.com order through 10.19.08. Enter code FreeShipLS.

Where: Origins.comicon

Adidas Cotton Tech Women Deodorant

What: Adidas Cotton Tech Women Deodorant

This one works really well, bit it isn’t always invisible and it doesn’t smell as nice as the Origins. But it works really, really well. You can apply it once after you shower and it will last until your next shower, even if that doesn’t happen for 3 days.

Price: $4.49

Where: Amazon.com

Jason Deodorant Stick

What: Jason Deodorant Stick in Tea Tree

I started using this one because I suddenly became allergic to the Toms of Maine deodorant and developed a horrible rash that took like 3 days to go away.

This one seems gentle and effective enough, but I like the 2 above a lot more. This is my back up one now…

It comes in a couple different scents, but the Tee Tree is my favorite. Tee Tree oil is supposed to help deodorize pretty well.

Price: $3.50

Where: Target and online at Vitacost.com
