Perish The Peplum

Can someone explain to my why I’m supposed to want to add a PUPLUM to my wardrobe this season?  The peplum, for you fashion  newbies, is the flounce of material on a dress or skirt that adds a poof to your waist, abdomen and hips.  See Exhibit A:

Personally, after 3 children, an appendectomy and abdominal surgery to correct a girly problem, the LAST place I want to draw attention to is my abdomen.  The added material adds weight and bulk to that area so many women are trying to hide – and then mix it up with a heavy fabric and pattern – trust me, you’re not doing yourself any fashion favors.

I suppose if you’re Michelle Williams and have the body and build of a 12 year old you can successfully carry of said peplum, but for the rest of us mere mortals it’s a tricky fashion proposition.

Despite the attitude and general fierceness of these runway models, the peplum here isn’t really working any magic on them either:

If you REALLY want to go peplum, try lightweight fabrics that drape nicely and have a bit of sway to them.  Stay away from heavy fabrics that hold their shape like poplin and twill.  And peplums will work best if you tend to wear skirts at your natural waist, rather than just below your belly button.

Also, make sure your hem length is in line with the most flattering part of your leg or the visual that will be projected is that you have too much material going on.  (Check out the girl in the yellow dress above…yuck…)

If you’re feeling sassy and want to add a little drama and swag to your outfit, I say go for it.  But if you’re trying to dress to look slim and sleek, adding a peplum probably isn’t the way to go.  If you love peplums and think they are a great trend for this season, leave us a comment and tell us why, so we can share it with our readers.   And if you wish the peplum would just go away, tell us that too.  We love to hear from you!

Unzip Your Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans can be every fashionista’s nemesis.  You have to find just the right pair that hugs but doesn’t strangle, flatters but doesn’t draw too much unwanted attention, lifts your butt without looking like you are wearing shapers and then puddles perfectly atop whatever range of footwear is your choice of the day.  A pretty tall order.  But when you find that holy grail of jeans, look out!  They can be your best friend!

A new trend in skinnies the the ankle zip, which gives you some flexibility in your styling options when the full on skinny thing just isn’t working.  I love this (super pricey) pair from Lot78:

Lot78 Ankle Zip Jeans $315 at Net-A-Porter

Zipped at the ankle they are your expected go-to skinnies, but unzipped they turn into a completely different pair of pants with totally different styling options:

For a more economical and creative look, you can try adding a little ankle cleavage to your existing skinny jeans, a la Leandra Medine of  Man Repeller.  Back in November she put her own twist on unzipped skinny jean ankle cleavage using this image as inspiration:

and came up with this awesome look:

Cool, right!  And totally unexpected.  The trick is using skinny jeans that are too long so you have nice draping over the top of the foot.  I tried this with a pair of $20 jeans from Old Navy and the concept worked well, but the pants weren’t long enough to get the look I wanted.  I have my eye open for a pair of extra long skinnies (I just can’t emotionally commit to cutting my favorite-perfect-awesome pair!) so I can try again for a similar look.

The added bonus of unzipped skinnies or flaunting some ankle cleavage is that it makes your legs look leaner and a draws the eye away from the widest point of the hip.

So go make friends with your skinny jeans and see what kind of unexpected styling tricks or options you can come up with.

Spotty Christmas Presents

I love all things leopard, and when I came across this Marc by Marc Jacobs skirt…well… all I can say is Mee-Yow…

Sphinx Spotted Velvet Skirt $428

Of course, it is on the pricey side, but sometimes you have to hope you’ve been a good girl all year and that Santa is going to deliver the goods.  If he doesn’t, there’s always this lovely number by MinkPink:

Call of the Wild Maxi Skirt $71.99

If either of these showed up under my tree I’d be happy…hint, hint!

Both skirts are available on-line at Piperlime.com.  You can also find some adorable skirts and great gift ideas at The Budget Fashionista.  Happy shopping!

Review: J.Jill Marled Sweater Coat

Even here in SoCal, the weather turned chilly right before Thanksgiving, so I found myself giving thanks for a cozy item I had for review. The J.Jill marled sweater coat is a full-length, cardigan style sweater in a plush (and surprisingly soft) wool.

Since I have yet to reach 5’3″ on the measuring stick (after 20 years of trying), I have never worn a sweater coat before. It’s always seemed like too much for a petite person, and this one was a bit long for me. Despite that, like all J.Jill items I’ve tried, it’s very well made. The shoulders and body of the sweater are beautifully tailored, avoiding the slightly sloppy look of some sweater coats. It would just work better on someone who’s at least 5’6″.

That said, I certainly enjoyed it. First of all, it’s quite warm; in fact, the only thing currently in my closet that’s warmer is my winter coat. Whenever it actually gets cold here, my house turns into an igloo, so having this sweater coat was crucial during our recent frosty spell. And even though I’m typically sensitive to wool (to the point of not wearing it), this wool is so high-quality that it’s actually soft enough to curl up in.

Also, the marled pattern is lovely– a pretty mix of browns, greys, and creams. It’s a great going-apple-picking-in-New-England kind of look. If I lived in a cold clime and were taller, that’s exactly how I’d wear it, just toss it on over jeans. I Polyvored the following, though, to show you how I wore it while compensating for my (lack of) height.

J.Jill Sweater Coat

Wearing black from top to bottom gave me an illusion of length, so the sweater coat didn’t look overwhelming. If I’d really wanted to stretch that, I could have worn a boot with a heel.
So while this item presents a few challenges for my fellow petites, I can definitely recommend it for taller ladies. It is a true classic, the type of piece I can envision someone gleefully pulling out every October.

The J.Jill Marled Sweater Coat retails for $199.

Review: J.Jill Washed Silk Charmeuse Tunic

Every once in a while, I come across an item of clothing that I immediately adore, and it becomes an essential of my wardrobe.

When I received the Washed Silk Charmeuse Tunic from J.Jill, I didn’t expect it to be one of those pieces.  Historically, tunic style tops don’t work for me.  In fact, since I’m both petite and bosomy, anything without a defined waist usually makes me feel like Frumpelstiltskin.  Not in this case, though!  As soon as I tried it on, I was in love.  Why?

  • The texture is to-die-for.  So soft and luxurious, it floats on your skin like a pampering layer of your favorite expensive moisturizer.  This not only feels great (which I believe, in turn, translates into looking great) but also makes it an ideal layering piece with winter’s itchy wools.
  • It’s beautifully cut.  Despite its unstructured design, it’s so well-made that it’s quite flattering.  The hem of the tunic hit me in the perfect spot on my upper-mid thigh, making it a great companion for both skinny jeans and leggings.
  • The color is lovely.  Generally speaking, cream is a tough shade to pull off (particularly for fair-skinned folk like me).  But the shimmery sheen of the fabric gives this top a candlelit quality.

So I’m giving it my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.  I’ve worn it twice already and gotten numerous compliments; the best kind of compliments, too– not the “What a cool shirt,” kind but the “You look gorgeous!” kind.  As Madame Chanel told us, a truly great item of clothing doesn’t draw attention to itself but to the woman who wears it.

Thanks to Polyvore, I put together a couple of looks that are similar to how I’ve already worn this top.  See below:

Silk Charmeuse Shirt 1

Silk Charmeuse 2

And just for fun, since it occurred to me that this top would be glam for some splash-free lounging by a posh pool once the weather warms up again, I put this look together.  (Totally theoretical; since I have a little boy, my pool time is unlikely to be either posh or splash-free any time in the forseeable future!)
Silk Charmeuse 3

So are there any drawbacks at all?  Two teensy ones.  First, it’s a more delicate fabric.  Since it’s either handwash or dry clean, there’s some maintenance involved.  And it’s a bit sheer, so a camisole is a must.  Other than that, though, it’s a fabulous item, and a versatile, classic addition to my wardrobe.  I’m actually purchasing a second in cream and am considering picking up one in midnight as well.  (Note to J.Jill: if you make a black, I’m sold.)

If you’re in the market for high quality basics, I strongly recommend you scoot on over to J.Jill and try it on.

The Washed Silk Charmeuse Tunic by J.Jill ($99) is currently available online and in stores nationwide.

Style Mint (the cousin of Jewel Mint – the fabulous site that is sponsoring a give away ending tomorrow on The Fashionable Housewife…don’t forget to enter..!) is one of my favorite shopping sites.  I read a quote that said “…anything the Olsen twins touch turns to gold…” and I couldn’t agree more.  The T-shirts the offer on StyleMint.com are very stylish and made with great quality and attention to detail.  But what I’m loving right now are their Halloween styling suggestions.  Today’s theme is Witchy Vibes.  Check out this Tumblr:

Leather Shorts: A Fashion Do or Don’t?

Leather shorts have been showing up on runways and fashion pages for over a season now, and for some reason I am obsessed with them.  The problem is, I have passed that certain age when comfortably wearing leather shorts is OK, to lingering in a place where wearing leather shorts elicits a response akin to “…what are you THINKING?”  But I can’t seem to shake my fashion curiosity, and every time a cute pair pops up in a magazine spread or on my computer screen, I try to convince myself that they are a worthwhile investment that I could actually pull off.   This pair is currently being featured on the Shopbop.com Lookbook:

See by Chloe leather fringe shorts $735 at Shopbop.com

Doesn’t the model look adorable in these!  Granted, $735 is kind of steep for a limited use piece, but they are gorgeous, nonetheless.

Another pair I love are these vegan leather shorts from Free People.

Vegan Leather Shorts $98 at Free People

Much more reasonably priced, and made of a synthetic material that feels like real leather but is animal friendly, these shorts could become a wardrobe staple  if done right.  I confess I have tried them on in the store but the 2″ rise scares me away.

A more happy medium are these beauties from the Olsen line Elizabeth & James:

I love the longer rise and the cuff detail, although the pleating at the waist can often add unwanted bulk – something I don’t want to think about while sporting confidence dubious leather shorts!

If you decide to go the way of the short, tights and mid calf high boots can help transition this traditionally summer staple into the cooler months of fall.  Just try to keep your colors in the same family so you don’t look chopped into sections.  Add a texture rich sweater or cropped jacket and you’re all set to make a hip statement.
