Shopping the Summer Sales: Nordstrom

NORDSTROM.com Anniversary Sale. Fall Fashion Now. Shop Early. Save Big.

I’m browsing the summer sales in search of great pieces– the kind that will transition into fall.  With significant discounts available at even pricey retailers, it’s possible to shop some splurge-y stores without blowing your budget.

Of course, we all know that shopping sales can be an exercise in patience.  It’s often difficult to find the items you want in the size you need, but if it were easy, they wouldn’t be on sale!  If you’re up for the challenge, the savings make the extra effort worthwhile.

Today I’m hitting the event many shoppers look forward to all year long: the Nordstrom anniversary sale. This sale is legendary because it features a plethora of discounted items– including many for the upcoming season.  Since I’m looking to maximize my savings, I concentrated on pieces that are marked down 50% or more.  Here’s what I found along with some quick wardrobing thoughts via Polyvore:

Nordstom Dress

Paperwhite Stretch Cotton Shirt Dress ($168 to $83.90), Jessica Simpson Fit & Flare Trench ($138 to $68.90), Hobo International Pleated Shoulder Bag ($298 to $148.90), Circa Joan & David Darleen Pump ($88.95 to $43.90), and Cara Accessories Animal Print Wide Bangle ($38 to $18.90), shown with patterned scarf and black belt.

The khaki dress is great and can be worn well into the fall.  It comes with a fabric belt, which I’d definitely ditch in favor of a more polished option like the one shown above.  The Circa Joan & David pumps are timelessly gorgeous- a great buy.  The bangle is an affordable statement piece, and the mustard hobo is AWESOME.  The orange trench provides a luscious pop of color, and I threw in the scarf to pull it together.  Since this is Polyvore fantasy world, the scarf is vintage Hermes, but if I were shopping my real-world closet, I’d go for a less luxurious version of the same idea.

***

Nordstrom jacket

Steve Madden Faux Leather Bomber Jacket ($68 to $33.90), Via Spiga Shanti Boot ($298 to $147.90), Fossil Embossed Floral Bucket Bag ($168 to $83.90), shown with Kendra Scott necklace.

The jacket is the star of this show.  I love it styled simply and accented with interesting accessories like the burgundy bag and statement necklace.  The Via Spiga boots are a sexy smoky gray color and a smart buy.  FYI- the jacket also comes in black if you’re looking for a basic at a great price.

Shop early and save big on the newest clothes, shoes and accessories for kids.

Shopping the Summer Sales: Banana Republic

I’m browsing the summer sales in search of great pieces– the kind that will transition into fall.  With significant discounts available at even pricey retailers, it’s possible to shop some splurge-y stores without blowing your budget.

Of course, we all know that shopping sales can be an exercise in patience.  It’s often difficult to find the items you want in the size you need; they’re on sale for a reason.  But if you’re up for the challenge, the savings make the extra effort worthwhile!

Today: Banana Republic.  The tricky thing about BR clothes is that even on sale, they’re often closer to investment than deal.  However, they’re incredibly classic, so you can count on getting several seasons of wear out of them.  I usually take the sale as an opportunity to snap up a few timeless pieces.  Here are my picks from their sale along with some quick wardrobing ideas from Polyvore:

Serengeti wrap dress ($120 to $99.99), shown with denim jacket, red pumps, gold jewelry, and handbag.  Tribal prints like this one are still trending, and wrap style dresses will always be in style.  This is a great-looking garment that can dress up or down depending on your needs.

BR Monogram gold sandstorm skirt ($89.50 to $59.99) and Snake Embossed belt ($49.50 to $34.99), shown with boyfriend blazer, black tee, peep-toe booties, and necklace.  The reviews on this skirt are slightly mixed, but I love the way it looks.  From the customer feedback, it sounds like it might be challenging for those who feel self-conscious about their hips.  If that’s not a problem area for you, I think it would be really cute– especially with a belt for added definition.

Shopping the Summer Sales: Anthropologie

First up: Anthropologie.  Love the clothes.  The prices?  Not so much.  But thanks to neutral color palettes and interesting shapes, many of the pieces are perfect year-round.   Here’s my picks from the sale merchandise along with a bit of quick Polyvore wardrobing:

Deepest Fathoms Dress  ($188 to $69.95), shown with leggings, bolero, tote, and booties.  Love this cute silhouette, which could easily be worn as a tunic.  I’m all for belting if you’re into that.  Bonus: blue is going to be a hot, hot hue again this fall.

Cold Rush Cardigan ($98 to $49.95), Epehemera Forever Scarf ($38 to $19.95), and Tiny Bounty Hoops ($28 to $9.95), shown with black top, skinny jeans, and equestrian boots.  The reviews on the cardigan are slightly mixed, but I always love this shape.  That along with the chic color make me willing to try it.  And for less than $10, the hoops are a great everyday option.  My favorite piece of all?  The fabulous chartreuse scarf, which screams fall versatility.

Decorating Tips from $100 Makeover’s Leslie Segrete- Part 1

July 12th, 2010 by Lucie Amberg

If you enjoyed designer Leslie Segrete on Trading Spaces and While You Were Out, you definitely want to catch her latest show: A & E’s $100 Makeover

Like other favorites of the home makeover show genre, Leslie’s new project transforms cluttered, uninspired rooms into more liveable spaces– all with limited time and money (specifically $100 per room).  What makes this show fresh and interesting is the way Leslie maximizes her budget by utilizing the objects she finds in participants’ homes.  That can of paint you bought two years ago for the decorating project you never got around to?  She’ll use it on your weatherbeaten patio furniture– turning it into something fun again.  Those tablecloths your mother insisted you take even though they don’t come close to fitting your table?  No problem; Leslie’s a master at whipping up throw pillows and window treatments from unwanted linens.

Since we all have stuff lying around that could be put to better use and all love getting great home items for less, I think there’s a lot to learn and admire from the $100 Makeover‘s budget-friendly approach.  Recently, I got the chance to catch up with Leslie, and she graciously passed on some tips for TFH readers.

With grilling and gardens on my mind, my first question was obvious.  Since it’s summer entertaining season, what are some simple, inexpensive ways to liven up your patio for outdoor parties?

Leslie suggested “setting the stage” for the party with vibrant, colored tablewear.  She’s impressed with the acrylic dishes from the Ty Pennington collection at Sears

Ty Pennington floral drinkware collection at Sears.com

With a luscious selection of bright colors, cool patterns, and ombre styles available, just a bit can truly take your party from thrown-together barbecue to festive fete.  Since many of these pieces are currently on sale for as little as $0.99, they’ll hardly put a dent in your cocktail budget.  And if you’re looking to minimize expense even more, Leslie suggests adding just a few pieces to bring in that cheerful flavor.  Even a few glasses to hold your flatware will give your outdoor event a special touch.

If you’re open to making a larger investment (the kind you’ll enjoy long past your next party), Leslie recommends shopping the Jaclyn Smith outdoor collection at Kmart.  For a few hundred dollars, you may find some quality outdoor furniture that boosts your al fresco elegance many times over.

I’ve also had some luck finding colorful, vintage tablecloths on Ebay.  They add a fun, retro touch, and since they aren’t family heirlooms, I don’t mind when someone spills salsa on them.  Every stain is a story, right?

Stay tuned for more decorating and entertaining ideas from Leslie, and be sure to watch her on $100 Makeover on A&E, Saturdays at 10 AM Eastern/ Pacific!

On RueLaLa Today: Betsey Johnson

July 9th, 2010 by Lucie Amberg

It’s Betsey Johnson day at RueLaLa again, and that’s one boutique I always keep an eye out for.

Of course, Betsey is known for her outrageous sensibility, but in actuality her dress silhouettes are quite classic.  She creates her signature edge by using unexpected fabrics and details, which keeps the look fresh, modern, and fun.  Fashion that doesn’t take itself too seriously always makes me smile…

For example, I’d love to see this great Betsey Johnson dress

paired with a boyfriend blazer.

And this one

with a timeless, girly cardigan and strappy heels.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve been so into dresses that I now have enough to outfit a girls’ finishing school- which means I’ll be holding back today.  But I’m crossing my fingers that some of her fabulous legwear will be part of the boutique, and if so, I’ll snatch it up.  Sassy, sheer tights are just the thing during early fall, before the temperatures catch up with the styles.  With any luck, you’ll see me sporting some Betsey legs in October!
