Fall 2011 Beauty Essentials from Target

September 14th, 2011 by Amanda Davis

We were so excited when Target wanted to share their Fall beauty essentials with us… and obviously since they shared with us, we had to share with you! We absolutely love that Target is carrying not only great fashion designers (hello excited about Mossino!) but they carry great lines of beauty products as well (hello pixi, NP Set and JK Jemma Kidd)! So what are we most excited about??

NP Set Rewind and Replenish Facial Serum ($29) can be used day or night to rejuvenate and hydrate skin, preventing signs of aging and creating a glowing, new complexion. Revamp your daily makeup routine with the basics. NP Set also has some really great primers and some even with bronzers (for us gals that don’t have that natural glow).

Full, long lashes are easy to achieve with Maybelline New York Great Lash 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Mascaras ($6.99) designed by celebrated fashion designers Max Azria, Tracy Reese and Vivienne Tam that will be available exclusively at Target stores.

JK Jemma Kidd In-Vogue Perfect Blush ($18), available in three stunning shades, works to accentuate cheek bones

Pixi Succulent Lip Twin, Opal Orchid ($18) adds moisture and a hint of natural color to lips for an A + look.

Get Long and Luscious Lashes!

June 3rd, 2011 by Amanda Davis

Who doesn’t love Heidi Klum? Ummm, I can’t think of one person… anyways, one of the things I admire most about her is that she always looks stunning. One of my favorite things about her? Guh, her totally envy-worthy eyelashes! I have those undesirable short, “can’t work with them” lashes… but with a little help from Rapidlash (see excitement here), I am starting to be able to pull some fanciful makeup tricks off with a little more finesse.

What am I doing to pull of great lash looks for special occasions? (We are heading into Wedding season after all) Celebrity makeup artist, Kimara Ahnert of the Kimara Anhert Studio in NYC, breaks it down into 5 easy steps:

  1. Curl your lashes with a great lash curler (we recommend Tweezerman’s ProCurl Lash Curler). Start at the base of the lash then midway up the lash.
  2. Line lashes with a black liquid liner or creme liner (we recommend L’Oreal Paris Lineur Intense Liquid Liner) using an angular eyeliner brush.
  3. Pull the eye taut and using the angled brush (Sephora Collection Professional Brush #15 is awesome!), paint a thin line right into the base of the lashes. Want added drama? Increase the thickness of the line of liner. Tip: It should be thickest near the corner of the eye and then gently taper toward the outer corner.
  4. Follow with two different kinds of mascara- one for length and one for volume ( we don’t mind shortening this step with Covergirl Lash Blast Fusion Mascara (length + Volume )
  5. Use a lash comb (try Prestige Brow and Lash Brush Combo) to separate and remove any clumps.

What do you gals think? Will you try this the next time you want Va-Va Voom lashes?

Jillian Dempsey shares her Smashing Beauty Advice

May 16th, 2011 by Amanda Davis

We here at The Fashionable Housewife were SO excited to be able to participate in a round table discussion with Avon’s Global Creative Color Director (and Hollywood makeup artist) Jillian Dempsey! Not only was she super nice but she also had some great tips and tricks for us regular gals in our normal lives. She shared new product info, opinions on her “it” colors and even some “looks” for the upcoming Summer and Wedding Seasons… and because we love you ladies, we share. Check out some of the awesome information that Jillian shared with us this week. She was sure to include the great products from Avon that she helped to develop!

Get Jillian’s Spring/ Summer Look:

To create this Spring/Summer 2011 look:

1.Apply Jillian Dempsey for Avon Professional Eye Smokifier in Bronze along the upper lash line and circle around near the inner edge of the eye.
2.When applying True Color Eyeshadow Quad in Sandy Corals, apply the darker color in the quad to the outer edges of the eye so the shadow and eye liner meet in the middle of the eye and blend seamlessly.  Use the coral color in the quad as a base color on the lid.
3. Finish the look with a pink Be Blushed Cheek Color and SuperSHOCK Lip Shine SPF 15 in Popsicle for a soft pop of color on the lips.

Get Jillian’s Wedding Look:

To create this romantic Bridal look:

1.Apply the base color of the True Color Eyeshadow Quad in Mocha Latte all over the eyelid in a half moon shape.
2.Use the dark color in the crease of the eyelid to contour and underneath the lower lash line for a softer line.
3. Apply the lightest color in the quad on the brow bone to highlight the bone.
4. Accent in center of the eyelid with a shimmering color.
5. Finish the look with True Color Blush in Antique Rose and a warm lip color like SuperSHOCK Lip Shine SPF 15 in Bronze Blitz.

Jillian was confident that the makeup looks she created were on trend for this coming Spring and Summer. What is her “IT” color this season? She had to go with Popscicle and of course recommended her SuperSHOCK Lip Shine SPF 15 in Popsicle (available the end of June 2011), something we are excited to try (see Rachel McAdams in previous post). What does she recommend to keep our Summer makeup in place? A dusting of translucent powder will help keep our newfound makeup looks from melting away. And something she totally recommends? Take care of your skin and be sure to find that product that fits into your regimine with an SPF.

Some of Jillian’s newly developed products from Avon? Check ‘em out ladies:

RapidLash Does Not Disappoint

April 15th, 2011 by Amanda Davis

One of my biggest pet peeves about myself is that I have short,  stubby eyelashes that are hard to dress up! I have tried volumizing mascaras, lash lengthening primers and all those types of things but with only minimal improvements… and by improvements, I want to see lashes, baby!

Enter RapidLash, eyelash enhancing serum… their claim? “A cosmetic product that is clinically proven and guaranteed to transform brittle, short, sparse, thin lashes into fuller, healthier, thicker-looking lashes and brows in just weeks!”

What I discovered was that they totally made this hard to please diva, a happy camper in the lash department. It was tough for me to push myself to be patient enough to wait for results but once I did, and diligently used RapidLash on my lash line every night before bed, I did see a noticeable difference in my lashed in about 3-4 weeks. They guarantee results in 4-6 weeks but I didn’t have to wait that long!

My lashes are longer, even a little darker and have a personality all their own. I am sure there are varied results but my lashes were pitiful enough that I was/ am extremely happy with the amazing results. I dress my eyelashes up with all sorts of glam! They wear mascara so well now!

Want to try this for yourself? You can grab this highly recommended product online. So accessible ladies, so accessible.

5 Steps to the Perfect Smokey Eyes

March 26th, 2011 by Denise Shively

The smokey eye trend will never die, but I’m amazed how many women still don’t feel confident trying it for a night out. With the right technique, you can pull off this look beautifully in just 5 steps.

You’ll Need:

An eyeshadow primer (I like Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer)

Eyeliner (find one with a smudge stick on the end, or have a separate smudging tool available)

2 eyeshadow shades (one dark, one light – in complementary tones) CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast Shadow Stick in Onyx Smoke (pictured) offers the easiest way to rock the smokey eye look!

Mascara

Directions:

Step 1: Prep your lids with the shadow primer; this allows for eyeshadow to glide on smoothly and have a base to adhere to so it won’t crease or fade throughout the day. If you don’t have shadow primer, you can use a dab of your regular concealer in a pinch!

Step 2: Once primer has dried, use your eyeliner to line above the upper lash line. Make sure to follow your lashes as closely as possible, but make the line a bit thicker in the middle. For the bottom lash line, draw a thin line and smudge, smudge, smudge!

Step 3: Now comes the eyeshadow. Using the lighter color as your base, sweep the shade over your lids and up to the browbone. I love the CoverGirl product mentioned above; any of the shades you choose are perfect for creating a unique smokey eye.

Step 4: For the darker shade, apply color starting at your lash line and blending upwards – don’t put dark color above the crease, though! The trick here is to blend, blend and blend again to get the desired smokey eye affect without looking like you have two black eyes. As you’re blending, make sure you’re blending deep into the lash line so the eyeliner you applied earlier all but disappears.

Step 5: Finish with two coats of mascara (curl your lashes first, if desired) and voila! The perfect 5 step smokey eyes are yours! Use a Q-tip to clean up any spots or blend any excess product.

While the smokey eye look can be intimidating, as long as you blend (and blend well!) you can pull off this look with ease. Additionally, keep the rest of your makeup neutral to avoid competing with your strong eyes. Remember, practice makes perfect – so keep trying if you don’t nail it the first time.

If you try these tips, let me know how it works for you! Also, feel free to leave your tips for the perfect smokey eye in the comments below.

Product Review: Jane Iredale Purebrow Fix & Mascara

March 5th, 2011 by Amanda Davis

I received this product and was immediately inspired to groom my eyebrows, something I am really not usually inclined to do. I am fair skinned and have very light eyebrows so even if they are “overgrown” or  “out of control” it is not really noticeable to me… but when I really took a pair of tweezers to my brow region, I realized there was some work to be done. After the basic grooming was finished, I wanted to see if this jane iredale’s PureBrow Fix and Mascara was really all it is cracked up to be. The product sent me information which touted the following:

  • Convenient, Two easy steps to perfectly sculpted eyebrows.
  • PureBrow Fix & Mascara is a colorless formula that precisely places the brows and accentuates the eye.
  • Apply lightly to brow and comb to shape.
  • Can be used to hold brows in place or as a clear mascara.
  • Packaged in a double-ended tube.
  • Non-irritating formula
  • Pure, natural ingredients provide sheer coverage with a “no-makeup” look in a quick drying formula.

VERDICT? I really liked it! My first time trying it, I definitely put too much on my eyebrows. It was quick drying but I near cemented my brows in place haha. The second time I used it, I definitely used an appropriate amount and the result was great. The applicator brush was small and angled enough to move my brows into place before the “fix” took effect. Overall, I thought this was a great product for anyone looking to manage their eyebrows thin or thick. I plan to recommend this to my friends who are obsessed with grooming their brows; this is definitely the product for them.

jane iredale PureBrow Fix and Mascara, $20.00

Perfect Holiday Makeup Inspired by “Burlesque”

November 23rd, 2010 by Amanda Davis

Pop Sugar TV is just as excited as we are about the upcoming debut of  “Burlesque” starring two of my personal favorite Divas, Cher and Christina Aguilera (Opening November 24th). To celebrate the extravagance that is the costuming, hair and make-up, they teamed up with one of the best. Wait for it… they were lucky enough to get some great advice and a tutorial  from Christina Aquilera’s makeup artist Kristofer Buckle to get the glittery eye make up that makes Christina sizzle in Burlesque.  He shares tips on which makeup products to use and how to apply them to get the same festive, show stopping look that she wore on the movie poster and in “I’m a Good Girl.”  Now we can’t all wear this show stopping makeup to our family Christmas party but not to worry, Kristofer tones it down for a more wearable look.

What you’ll need? Get out your makeup bags girls and make a shopping list for what you don’t have.

* Liquid Liner (like M.A.C. Liquid Liner)

* Gray Eye Shadow (like Lancome Color Design in City Grey)

* Mascara (like Volume Express Falsies from Maybelline)

* Pink Cream Makeup (like Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadow)

* Deep Rose Lipstick (perhaps from bareMinerals?)

* Lip Liner (Prestige Cosmetics Lip Liner in Cabaret)

* Glitter

* False Eye Lashes

* Makeup Brushes

Once you have gathered your makeup goodies? Be sure to check out the tutorial so you get it juuuuuust right for that special holiday party: Tutorial Here!
