5 Steps to the Perfect Smokey Eyes

The smokey eye trend will never die, but I’m amazed how many women still don’t feel confident trying it for a night out. With the right technique, you can pull off this look beautifully in just 5 steps.

You’ll Need:

An eyeshadow primer (I like Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer)

Eyeliner (find one with a smudge stick on the end, or have a separate smudging tool available)

2 eyeshadow shades (one dark, one light – in complementary tones) CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast Shadow Stick in Onyx Smoke (pictured) offers the easiest way to rock the smokey eye look!

Mascara

Directions:

Step 1: Prep your lids with the shadow primer; this allows for eyeshadow to glide on smoothly and have a base to adhere to so it won’t crease or fade throughout the day. If you don’t have shadow primer, you can use a dab of your regular concealer in a pinch!

Step 2: Once primer has dried, use your eyeliner to line above the upper lash line. Make sure to follow your lashes as closely as possible, but make the line a bit thicker in the middle. For the bottom lash line, draw a thin line and smudge, smudge, smudge!

Step 3: Now comes the eyeshadow. Using the lighter color as your base, sweep the shade over your lids and up to the browbone. I love the CoverGirl product mentioned above; any of the shades you choose are perfect for creating a unique smokey eye.

Step 4: For the darker shade, apply color starting at your lash line and blending upwards – don’t put dark color above the crease, though! The trick here is to blend, blend and blend again to get the desired smokey eye affect without looking like you have two black eyes. As you’re blending, make sure you’re blending deep into the lash line so the eyeliner you applied earlier all but disappears.

Step 5: Finish with two coats of mascara (curl your lashes first, if desired) and voila! The perfect 5 step smokey eyes are yours! Use a Q-tip to clean up any spots or blend any excess product.

While the smokey eye look can be intimidating, as long as you blend (and blend well!) you can pull off this look with ease. Additionally, keep the rest of your makeup neutral to avoid competing with your strong eyes. Remember, practice makes perfect – so keep trying if you don’t nail it the first time.

If you try these tips, let me know how it works for you! Also, feel free to leave your tips for the perfect smokey eye in the comments below.

Revlon CustomEyes Eyeshadow & Liner Review

I recently got the chance to review the new CustomEyes Shadow & Liner palettes from Revlon.

I didn’t expect to be particularly impressed with these new palettes but I was pleasantly surprised! Six gorgeous color collections to choose from and each color palette contains four eyeshadows and a coordinating eyeliner. The collection choices are gorgeous, ranging from neutral earth tones (my favorite) to smokey shades to bright pastel colors that will be perfect for spring.

Each palette includes an easy to follow “how to” guide on the back of the packaging that shows you how to best use the CustomEyes Shadow & Liner, making it easy to have an expert look in minutes.

On it’s own, it didn’t last very long… Only about 4-6 hours. However, layered on top of Urban Decay Primer Potion it lasted all day long and looked as vibrant and bold as the moment I put it on.

I am pleased that Revlon made these palettes have rich, pigmented, and easily blendable shades. Most drugstore brand eyeshadows aren’t very pigmented and the color fades quickly, but Revlon really stepped it up a notch with CustomEyes.

The best part of all? These eyeshadow palettes are totally affordable, costing less than $10!

Approx. Price: $8.99

Availability: Mass market retailers and online at Amazon.com and Drugstore.com

Product Review: almay intense i-color smoky-i kit

So Kate Hudson looks absolutely gorgeous in her new ads for Almay, am I right? Well, she is gorgeous anyway but I have definitely been giving Almay more attention then I had in the past. I did a review over on The Fashionable Gal about the Almay wake-up makeup (which I looooooove) and just recently decided to try the intense i-color smoky kit because I want to achieve the radiance that Kate Hudson exudes… or at least what I can muster! Guess what? I LOVED it too! It comes in shades designed for your eye color, is easy to apply and lasted all my workday long. Not only that? My eyes POPPED! My blue eyes are usually pretty fierce but this eyeshadow definitely took it up a notch!

  • expertly coordinated shades complement your natural eye color to maximize the intensity
  • lightweight powder formula applies smoothly and blends effortlessly
  • soft pearl finish
  • eye color is intensified and brightened
  • crease-proof
  • all day wear
  • hypoallergenic
  • ophthalmologist tested

Quick and Easy Beauty Tips for a Better You

I love checking out quick and easy tricks to add to my beauty regime. The easier the better; you can learn them quick and adopt them even quicker! I had to share some of the tips that my favorites at Marie Claire have put out there and paired those tips with some of my favorite products!

TIP

Trying to look like you had your 8 hours when you tossed and turned all night? Avoid piling on the thick foundation. Use a tinted moisturizer instead, followed by maybe a beige eye pencil — it counteracts any redness and puffiness around your eyes. My suggestion? Clinique Moisture Sheer Tint SPF 15, $27.00

TIP

For full lips go for a glossy look, Yum! Try first outlining the perimeter of your lips using a concealer brush dipped in bronzer two shades deeper than your skin tone. Then, top pout with gold, peach, or coral gloss. Mmmmmm, I like Cover Girl Raspberry Wet Slicks Fruit Spritzers, $5.99

TIP

This is a tip on making your smallish eyes, open right up! You’ll want to  stay away from dark eyeshadows out there. Start with a nude base shadow, then apply shadow a shade or two darker than the base to your crease and use your finger to blend the color up toward your eyebrow. All in one favorite, Jane Iredale Perfectly Nude Eyeshadow Kit, $52.oo, makes this an easy trick!

TIP

When you are covering up blemishes, make sure you choose the color for what you are covering up. For example, orange-tinged concealers combat blueish under-eye circles. A mint-green concealer hides the redness of a pimple or blemish. The idea is that concealers act as neutralizers. When I have a nasty looking blemish, I attack it with Dermablend Smooth Indulgence Redness Concealer, $20.00

TIP

I had to be converted to toner but now that I have been, I am a loyal user. To sop up oil and refresh makeup, lightly mist your face with toner, then pat with a tissue. You then can finish with a dusting of  your favorite loose powder. My first and overall favorite toner has to be Aveda All Sensitive Toner, $25.00

Perfect Holiday Makeup Inspired by “Burlesque”

Pop Sugar TV is just as excited as we are about the upcoming debut of  “Burlesque” starring two of my personal favorite Divas, Cher and Christina Aguilera (Opening November 24th). To celebrate the extravagance that is the costuming, hair and make-up, they teamed up with one of the best. Wait for it… they were lucky enough to get some great advice and a tutorial  from Christina Aquilera’s makeup artist Kristofer Buckle to get the glittery eye make up that makes Christina sizzle in Burlesque.  He shares tips on which makeup products to use and how to apply them to get the same festive, show stopping look that she wore on the movie poster and in “I’m a Good Girl.”  Now we can’t all wear this show stopping makeup to our family Christmas party but not to worry, Kristofer tones it down for a more wearable look.
