What’s in my bathroom right now? Well, that would be a very, very long list! But I have narrowed down all the must-have products that I am using right now to get ready for summer…

Hair Removal Essentials

If you plan on wearing shorts or a swimsuit this summer, you’ll need these hair removal essentials to get silky, smooth legs. I start by waxing my legs with Veet Hair Removal Strips. I do both legs and my bikini line and then scrub down in the shower with Lavanila Body Wash and touch up any missed hairs with a Gilette Venus & Olay Razor. Being Italian, I have hair elsewhere that I’m not too crazy about… For that, I use the new super easy to use Olay Smooth Finish Facial Hair Removal Duo Kit for Fine to Medium Hair. Works in minutes with mo residual redness left behind afterwards, just smooth, hair-free skin. I use Tweezerman tweezers to touch up my eyebrows and any other stray hairs.

After waxing and shaving, I slather on Dial NutriSkin Replenishing Lotion Extra Dry Skin all over both legs to help heal and repair. The next day, I start using Jergens Natural Glow & Protect Daily Moisturizer SPF 20 for Fair to Medium, every other day for a week to get the perfect glow. When I need perfect looking legs for a special occasion and don’t want to wear nylons, I use Miracle Skin Transformer for Body SPF 20 in shade “Glow Enhancer” to cover any imperfections, giving me visually flawless looking legs. For this reason, I use Miracle Skin Transformer on my face too! It’s the perfect tinted moisturizer for daily use and part of my 15 minute beauty routine every morning after putting on Yes to Grapefruit Dark Spot Erase Serum.

Fat Removal Essentials

If I’m not leaving the house, I have my Delfin Spa Anti-Cellulite Shorts on, especially in the summer since they are even more effective in the heat. We all know that deodorant is an absolute essential for summer! My favorite one is Lavanila Healthy Deodorant. I have it in several different scents and stock one in every bathroom in my house as well as in my bedroom so I can put it on no matter where I am or when I need it. It’s effective (when used at least once daily), smells great and leaves my skin feeling soft and pampered.

Tips & Tricks For Feeling Great About Your Body

If you have a summer vacation planned this year, you might now be experiencing conflicting emotions. Part of you will be really looking forward to the chance to get away from it all, get some sun and relax, whilst another part is absolutely dreading having to bare all on the beach.

women_pinching_bellyIf you aren’t body confident and are worried about your beach body, you aren’t alone. A recent survey by Glamour found that on average, young women have around 13 negative thoughts about their bodies every day. Can you believe it?!

 

According to stylist Gok Wan, this needs to change. Women need to start loving their bodies and celebrating their best features, rather than rushing to get breast implant surgery, tummy tucks or liposuction. This is especially the case when it comes to revealing our bodies on the beach, an occasion which so many women dread. To get yourself ready for the beach, both physically and mentally, Gok has quite a few useful tips and tricks up his sleeve…

 

Gok Wan Tips:

 

  • Improve your posture. Without having to hit the gym or spend a fortune on a new wardrobe, you can drastically improve the way you look and feel simply by standing up straight. Your body will look longer and slimmer, and you’ll feel more confident, if you put your shoulders back, hold your tummy in, raise your chin and walk tall.
  •  

  • Choose the right swimwear for your body shape. Whenever you buy clothes, you should be looking for cuts, shapes and styles which flatter your body shape (i.e. pear shape, top-heavy, long and lean etc.). The same goes for buying a bikini or swimsuit – you should choose one which shows off your best bits and hides those you don’t like as much, rather than simply choosing a style that is currently in fashion.
  •  

  • Strip it all off and take a long look at yourself in the mirror, balancing every negative thought you have of your body with a positive one. So, for every “I don’t like my cleavage – I need a boob job” you should counter with an “actually, I have a really tiny waist” or “my legs are really long and toned”. It can be hard to praise yourself, but it is so good for your self-image and body confidence to focus on the areas you like about yourself, rather than obsessing over those you don’t.
  •  

  • Give your skin a glow. To look great on the beach, a top tip is to use a subtle self-tan or a body oil, both of which will make you look and feel fantastic. If you’re anything like me, you probably have trouble staying motivated and sticking to your fitness routine. Every day I come up with a bunch of excuses (to myself) of why I don’t need to workout that day or why I have something else to do that’s more important. What’s nice about the pieces in her new collection is they are appropriate for any kind of workout routine. Once I warmed up, I took off the super soft and comfortable coverup and stripped down to the HKNB Tunic Tee ($39.99) in florescent green. I love how thin and lightweight this tee is. It’s very stretchy and soft, making it very comfortable to workout in. The Tech Capri’s are equally as comfortable. Slim fitting and super stretchy, I feel totally unrestricted wearing these – like I could do anything! Same with the HKNB Essential Tight ($74.99) which are pretty much my favorite leggings now. They have cute shirring/gathering at the ankles, a hidden pocket in the waist band for your keys (or other small items) and are made of a moisture wicking fabric.

All four of the pieces I received to review fit perfectly, were very comfortable and flattering as well. My favorite pieces was definitely the HKNB Coverup. I am absolutely in LOVE with it! It’s super soft on this inside, which is great against bare skin, unlike most workout sweatshirts. I also appreciate that it’s long enough to cover my butt, which is essential in my opinion! Another neat feature is the thumb holes in the sleeves and the large kangaroo pocket in the front. Perfect for putting your hands in or throwing your cell phone or iPod into. This coverup has such a nice shape to it and is so stylish that I can definitely wear it even when I’m not exercising. It’s definitely going to be a part of my daily wardrobe, not just my workout wear.

How To Avoid Belly Bloat And Other Tips

If you are a fan of this blog then you might remember that last summer I lost 18 pounds in 8 weeks on the Dukan Diet. I learned SO much about health and nutrition, reading the book The Dukan Diet: 2 Steps to Lose the Weight, 2 Steps to Keep It Off Forever. It helped me learn what foods would help me lose weight and keep the weight off and which foods I should avoid all together.

I have done a pretty remarkable job (*pats self on back*) at staying around or under my target weight all winter, even though I did gain about 5 pounds over the holiday season… I’m still thinking about getting “bikini perfect” soon though because Lord knows I wouldn’t want to bare-all right now! Good gracious…

Did you know there are “good for you” foods that can actually make you look and feel fat?

Franci Cohan - NutritionistWe are excited to share with you these tips and tricks on how to avoid belly bloat from certified nutritionist Franci Cohen suggests these meals that will not give you a bulging belly.

For a girl’s night out: Don’t be afraid to have a large meal beforehand (large meaning more than just a PB&J). If you are planning for an active night, whether dancing, bowling or party hopping, you will need the fuel. Franci Cohen has created the perfect meal for this situation:

  • 1 grilled chicken breast (approx 4 oz)
  • 1/2 cup cooked brown rice and lentils
  • 1 cup steamed string beans

This combo will fill you up without weighing you down, and will give you the energy you need to dance the night away!
 
For a dinner- date: You’re wearing a stunning new BCBG dress that already had to be zipped up by your roommate. When you’re at the restaurant with your guy refrain from ordering a salad to make it look like you’re being healthy. All the veggies in the salad will actually cause your stomach to bloat more. Franci advises that a fish dish with one side of grilled veggies is the way to go! “Wild Salmon is jam-packed with heart healthy vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids. If Salmon is not an option, mackerel, sea bass and lemon sole are all good options as well. As for the veggies, try to steer clear of cruciferous veggies (such as cauliflower, broccoli) that can cause bloating. Instead opt for grilled zucchini, asparagus, or carrots – which will keep your tummy tamed!”
 
For a day at the beach: It’s finally getting warm out and you can take that bathing suit out of hiding. If you’re going to the beach you need a healthy, energizing meal to get you through the morning but you don’t want it to show in your stomach.  You’re probably thinking that the easiest thing to eat before you head out is some Special K with skim milk. It’s low in calories after all, right? It doesn’t matter how low-cal it is, the dairy and multi-grains will expand in your intestines, causing your gut to stick out. Instead of cereal, Franci has an awesome recipe for oatmeal pancakes. Take 1/2 cup raw oats, 3 egg whites, 1/2 apple, and a dash of cinnamon and throw in a blender to create the pancake mix. This high fiber non-fat breakfast choice offers whole grain fiber plus additional fiber from the apple, and protein from the egg whites. It’s a great filling way to start the day, and will not create any abdominal gas or bloating, so you can go bikini-bare with ease!

For an afternoon luncheon: Eating a well-balanced lunch is essential for boosting energy and productivity; giving you power over that mid-day slump and keeping your metabolism active.  A lot of times people want to skip lunch in hopes of losing weight and grab an energy drink to keep them going. This is so bad! The carbonation from an energy drink will make you more bloated then a light lunch. Franci says, “For a mid-day luncheon, your best bet is a salad chock-full of fresh veggies and greens, and topped with a piece of grilled fish, low-fat tuna salad, or fresh turkey breast slices. Throw a few walnuts or almonds on top and dress with a low fat/low sugar dressing, to finish off your delicious salad creation!”

For traveling days: These days airports are getting bigger and so are the food courts. It’s tempting to give in to the convenience of fast travel food, but the combination of a high-sodium smorgasbord and air travel equals a very bloated body from head to toe. You absolutely must resist because there are better options. Eat before you leave for the airport.  Franci suggests packing your carry-on with fruits, veggies, and granola bars. Believe it or not these are available at kiosks. Also, avoid the beverage service on board. Stick to water, you will have a happier flight and feel revived upon arriving at your destination!

Review (with before and after pictures) of i-Lipo Laser Liposuction Treatment

Everyone knows that diet and exercise is the best way to lose weight. However, that isn’t always enough and we all know there is almost always room for improvement!

iLipo MachineThe idea of getting full blown liposuction is kinda scary, so you might be a little excited to hear about i-Lipo. It’s a non invasive type of liposuction, takes about 30 minutes per session, NO downtime and it actually works!

Jessica Alba reportedly had a few i-Lipo sessions to get ready for attending the Golden Globes awards shows. She looked absolutely amazing! (And hasn’t she had two kids?!) I also saw the treatment reviewed on “Ricki Lake Show” and noticed substantial results on the woman they performed the procedure on during the show.

Okay, so you’re probably wondering, what exactly is i-Lipo and how do I get it?! Well, first off, it’s the first FDA approved, low level and non-invasive treatment to get rid of cellulite, fat, and lessen the appearance of stretch marks. It was created and launched in the UK, won a slimming award in Paris and is now used all over the USA, Canada and Australia.

How does it work? Four small plastic paddles are placed on the treatment area and secured with velcro straps so they stay in place. The paddles emit low levels of laser energy, which essentially blasts the fat cells without harming your skin. It sends the signal to break down the stored triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol which then releases the fat to be eliminated from the body. This process of releasing the fatty acids is actually a natural response the body has when the body needs to used stored energy reserves. So the nice thing about the i-Lipo is that it’s not creating any unnatural reaction in the body nor does it damage or alter any surrounding structures such as skin, blood vessels and peripheral nerves.

The usual treatment areas are abdomen (mummy tummy!), thighs, love handles/muffin top and even upper arms. You can basically get i-Lipo any place that you want to slim down that the i-Lipo paddles can be placed on. I decided to get my abdomen / mid-section done (although I considered doing my thighs since no amount of exercise seems to make them any smaller!).

I decided to be brave and make an appointment at Dr. Jafar Koupaie’s office (Boston Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center)in Brookline, MA to receive the i-Lipo treatment from nurse practitioner Stacey Luddy.

I talked with Stacey for about 10 minutes before receiving the treatment and she was such a sweetheart! I asked her a bunch of questions I thought you ladies would want to know the answers to, before considering a treatment like this. Here is the scoop…

Q&A

  1. How much does 1 treatment cost? Treatments range from $350-$650 each (BDCSC charges $500 per treatment) but you can get discount packages if you agree to doing the recommended 8 treatments.
  2. How many treatments do I need to get full results? The recommended course of treatment is 8 sessions.
  3. How many treatments before I notice ANY results? Generally patients can see results after just one treatment. (I did!)
  4. How long does it take to receive 1 treatment? Each treatment takes about 30 minutes.
  5. How far apart should each treatment be? There should be at least 4-5 days between each treatment to give your body time to get rid of the fat. Once a week is recommended.
  6. Does it hurt? The most you will feel is a warming sensation.
  7. Where does the fat go? It’s absorbed into the lymph system and flushed out. (Hence the recommended increase in water consumption post-treatment!)
  8. Will it harm my skin? Your skin gets slightly red and warm (This disappeared before I even left the office.)
  9. Are there any known negative side effects? Apparently people with extremely sensitive skin might notice more redness and it may last a couple hours before subsiding, but this extremely rare.*
  10. Can I wear my HotPants after receiving the treatment? They recommended that I not wear them immediately after the procedure just to make sure my skin was not going to have a negative reaction to the treatment. My skin had absolutely no reaction to the procedure at all, so I wore my hotpants the next day.

Immediately after the i-Lipo Treatment, you’re supposed to exercise vigorously to assist in eliminating those freed fatty acids from your body. They recommend that you take a brisk walk or do 20 minutes of cardio. (I think doing one of Jillian Michaels – 30 Day Shred 20 minute workouts would be ideal.) I couldn’t find my Jillian DVD so I did 30 minutes on my Stair Stepper when I got home, the same day that I received the treatment.
