Organix® Energizing Passionfruit Guava Shampoo and Conditioner

I am in loooooooooooooooove… with a shampoo and conditioner. Yes, you heard me right, I love a shampoo and conditioner… oh,  let me count the ways! Organix, beauty pure and simple, has a new line of Shampoos and Conditioner to add to their award winning collection. The addition that I am in love with? The Energizing Passionfruit Guava Shampoo and Conditioner.

“Energizing Passionfruit Guava Shampoo & Conditioner-A sensual exotic blend of energy rich organic passionfruit extract to stimulate and hydrate your tired tresses, while organic guava adds essential vitamins and antioxidants to enrich your hair, along with orange blossom infused honey for a brilliant lustrous and frizz-free shine.”

Oh Energizing Passionfruit Guava Shampoo, how do I love thee:

  • You smell oh so juicy… and you make my hair smell oh so juicy too! My man even made a comment on how great my hair smelled!
  • You are sulfate free/ paraben free. For me, that is key. I color and highlight my hair and those sulfides can do a number on my locks!
  • I found out that your bottles are eco-friendly. EPGS, you are green!
  • My hair is so shiny because of you, for this I am grateful!
  • You are so accesible. Available at CVS, Walgreens, Target, Walmart and more… how could I go wrong?
  • Oh so affordable you are. Retailing for $6.99, I won’t break the bank for great hair.

My experience is with just one of many new additions to the Organix family. I am obviously looking forward to trying all of them but you can only wash your hair so many times a day… unless you’re Jessi Spano! The next on my list is sure to be the Moisturizing Grapefruit Mango Butter or the Fortifying Lavender Soymilk shampoo and conditioners.

Have you tried any of the other new additions? If so, let us know! We’d love to hear what you have to say.

Do you want Big Sexy Hair?

This Thanksgiving I traveled with my boyfriend to spend time in Colorado with his family… and don’t you know, I didn’t bring ANY hair care products except my straightener. Can you believe what a nut I am?

Soooooooooooo running to the only store open on Thanksgiving was a supermarket so obvi the selection was a smidge limited or so I thought. Then there is was, the travel pack of Big Sexy Hair. Now I am sure that you have seen it (or use it) but I had never tried any of their products before (I am a die hard L’Oreal fan)… Now I think I may pledge my allegiance to Big Sexy Hair.

The Sexy Hair® Big Sexy Hair® Salon Travel Kit includes: 1.7-oz. Big Volume shampoo, 1.7-oz. Big Volume conditioner, 1.7-oz Blow Dry volumizing gel & 1.5-oz. Spray & Play® volumizing hairspray all for $9.99 (sucha great deal).

I love the fragrance, I love how soft my hair is,  I have got killer volume going today and I cannot stop playing with my hair today… hence me coming to my computer, logging in and telling you all how in love I am with this Big Sexy Hair business.

I purchased mine travel pack at a Safeway but I totally saw it online at Kohl’s but I am positive you can get this where you normally purchase your beauty products.  I really, really suggest you try this out if you aren’t already in a relationship with this awesome stuff! Plus it has a sexy design.

Review Series: Avon Lotus Shield Frizz Control- Part 5

So I had great success with Avon Lotus Shield Frizz Control leave-in conditioner, which– as advertised– kept my hair sleek and smooth for three days.

Since my hair is thick, curly, and generally unmanageable, I am dependent on great products and styling to give it a civilized appearance.  After significant testing, I definitely believe that Avon Lotus Shield will be a great addition to my hair regimen, and at a cool $12, it’s much less expensive than the high-end straightening product I normally use.  A win-win!

However, I understand that not everyone wants (or needs!) to spend 45 minutes with the blowdryer just to style their hair.  Several people asked me:

“Does Lotus Shield work if you don’t style your hair at all?”

I was wondering, too, so I tried it out.  Here’s what my hair looked like when I simply shampooed, conditioned, applied Lotus Shield, and let it air dry:

Not exactly sans frizz, and I see many, many flyaways.  When I compare it to my air-dried hair without Lotus Shield, though, it looks like a major improvement.

See– here’s how my hair looks when it’s shampooed, conditioned, and totally unstyled with no Lotus Shield.  (And please remember that it hurts me to show the following pic at all!)

Comparing the photos, I definitely think that Lotus Shield gives my hair a much silkier, prettier texture– even without any blowdrying or styling at all.  And I can see it working very well for someone with a cute, short, wash-and-go kind of cut.

Review Series: Avon Lotus Shield Frizz Control- Part 4

I was really happy with the results I got from my first two days of Avon Lotus Shield Frizz Control.  To recap, on Day 1, I shampooed and conditioned with Avon Lotus Shield products, worked a nickel-sized amount of the Frizz Control leave-in conditioner into my hair, and styled as usual.

Here are the results:

I was pleased with the sleek, straight texture Lotus Shield gave my thick, curly, strong-willed hair.  But I liked the Day 2 results even better.  That’s right– on the second day, I just put my hair up while I showered, and when I took it down, it was ready to go.  I simply touched it up with a couple of hot rollers and a spritz of volumizing spray.

Here’s how Day 2 looked:

But even after this positive experience, I had doubts that Lotus Shield could deliver on its big promise, namely “manageable and well-behaved [hair] for three smooth and sleek days.”  No matter the product, I thought it was impossible to get vital-looking hair for three days.

But I tried it, and while Day 3 definitely lacked some of the body of Days 1 & 2, it was definitely smooth and straight.  For me, this was okay for a ponytail.  Check it out:

So while I wouldn’t go for three days on a regular basis, getting that extra 24 hours of straight hair could come in handy while traveling or during particularly crazy weeks.  And in all of my experience with frizz control products, I’ve never used one that does a better job of delivering smooth, straight locks with so little maintenance.  With one application of a $12 product, Lotus Shield definitely makes the most of what it has!

Review Series: Avon Lotus Shield Frizz Control- Part 2

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been testing Avon’s newest anti-frizz product, Lotus Shield.

When Avon reached out to TFH about reviewing this product, I jumped at the chance.  Not only am I always on the lookout for new ways to combat frizz (something you’ll understand when you check out the pics of my non-frizz-treated hair), but this product makes an especially bold claim.  According to Avon, Lotus Shield can deliver “manageable and well-behaved [hair] for three smooth and sleek days.”

Now, that would be something.  After much convincing from my stylist, I switched to an every-other-day shampooing schedule– shampooing and styling one day, giving my hair a break the next.  This works for me and has noticeably improved my hair’s texture and durability.  But three days?  After three days, I’m certain my hair would be limp and lifeless.  If Lotus Shield could actually deliver smooth, sleek, shiny hair on that third day, however, it certainly would come in handy while traveling or during particularly hectic weeks.

Plus, Avon Lotus Shield comes with a sweet, little price tag of $12, which makes it much less expensive than the salon brand anti-frizz product I currently use.

But does it actually work?

Well, before I can answer that, I have to show you what I’m dealing with naturally.  My hair is thick, curly, unmanageable, and stubborn.  And while it hurts me to show you this, I think you need pics to understand just what a challenge this is for Lotus Shield.  So here’s my hair washed and conditioned with no styling whatsoever:

And an even closer look:

Ouch!  As you can see, lots of flyaways and just generally out-of-control looking hair.

And here’s the difference after shampooing with Frizz Control Lotus Shield shampoo, conditioning with the companion product, treating with Lotus Shield Frizz Control, and styling.

I still see some flyaways, but overall the texture is a huge improvement from my hair’s natural state!  I would say it’s comparable to the results I normally get with my high-end products.  One area where Avon bested the products I normally use: body.  I sometimes feel like my usual hair products sacrifice a bit of body and volume to deliver smooth, shiny hair, so I really liked how much life my hair had when using the Avon Lotus Shield products.

But can it sustain that for a 2nd day?  We’ll see…

What’s really lurking in your Shampoo & Conditioner?

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Propylene Glycol (PG), most likely.

These common ingredients  found in most drugstore shampoos and conditioners may seem harmless, and save you money, but they might be costing you something else. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or SLS  can cause blindness and lead to the formation of cataracts. Since SLS penetrates the brain, eyes and liver and remains in those areas long-term it can retard the healing process of certain cells and even degenerate them. For example, eyes that incur cell damage would not be able to heal properly while SLS is in the system. According to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) used by the US government, SLS can also cause burning sensations, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting.

Propylene Glycol is a chemical derived from petroleum; it can be found in most shampoos and conditioners of a pharmaceutical grade.  Industrial grade PG is present in anti freeze, paint, laundry detergent and de-icers. While the jury is still out on exactly how harmful the pharmaceutical additive is to the human body long term, during testing with the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel, it caused eczema and skin irritation in 50% of the participants who used it. Cases of liver, skin, and kidney damage were also reported by the MSDS.

It is a personal rule of mine to avoid SLS (and any cousins of SLS) products, and I don’t see much difference in the performance of SLS-free versus consumer brands with sulfates. The cleaning power is just as good, and much less damaging for my totally chemically damaged hair. Try a few natural shampoos and conditioners to keep your insides as healthy as your outside.

An added bonus of using SLS free shampoos is that perms and Brazilian blowouts last longer, and hair is less dry and frizzy over time with repeated use, so what’s the harm? Try a few of these SLS and PG free shampoos and conditioners in lieu of standard popular brands (most are pretty cheap) :

Beauty Without Cruelty Rosemary Mint Shampoo

Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo

De-luxe Color Save Conditioner (For Color Treated Hair)

Earth Science Hair Treatment Conditioner
