John Frieda® Precision Foam Colour Review

December 15th, 2011 by Amanda Davis

We are always excited when John Frieda comes up with something new and exciting for our locks.  We are avid users of the Frizz-Ease line of products so are always pretty eager to try the next best thing… enter the John Frieda® Precision Foam Hair Color. Yes, before you ask, I will tell you that I DO color my hair at home #1 because I have a light blonde shade of hair that is easy to maintain and #2 I have become pretty expert at it, without ruining the quality of my hair. Before I was given the opportunity to try John Frieda® Precision Foam hair color, I had pretty much been set it my ways with a run of the mill bottle color and shade… until I met this product in Extra Light Beige Blond.

Even Michelle Tractenberg does her own at home color!

My first immediate thought when opening the package was that it was a little higher scale than what I am used to with my at home color. From the applicator gloves to actual directions, everything was a step above the rest in terms of quality. If you color your hair at home, you know the importance of gloves that don’t slide off your hands. The directions were easy enough to follow and while I was skeptical about the “foam” part of it being able to color my little longer than shoulder length hair, that foam pump kept on pumping in order to provide FULL coverage of my hair. In addition to the foam being easy to apply, there was no drippage and my hair sat in a pile on my head while I let the color do it’s thing. The fact that there was little odor at all was a welcomed change from the chemical scent that I am used to when coloring my hair at home. So was I happy with the color when I rinsed? Absolutely, my color was spot on. The color was crisp and full bodied. My hair did not seem to sustain any damage from the color and the conditioner I received has been far superior to my previous brand. I was not expecting to like this product as much as I do… and I am definitely planning to use it again in the future.

*This product was provided to us free of charge for review. Our opinions are our own and we are completely and 100% honest with you guys!

New U COLOR™ By UMBERTO Review

July 13th, 2011 by Amanda Davis

“Introducing U Color™ by Umberto – the cutting-edge line of foolproof professional color in a no-measure sachet system that is so simple, anyone can get salon-style results in the comfort of their home. At a time where money is tight and women are really cutting back on spending, Umberto (salon master of Beverly Hills) wanted to provide women with a product that allows them to both look and feel beautiful even if they don’t have the money for in-salon color or frequent touch-ups. This specially formulated demi-permanent color has richer pigments for vibrant color. The formula is gentle like a semi-permanent but long lasting like a permanent color and because of the Equalizer it covers gray.  It is conveniently packaged in a mess-free Sachet Packet System designed to apply directly to the hair. Just snip, squeeze and smoosh!”

Notes Pre-Color:

I have the opportunity to try out this at home color (yes, I do my own hair at home just like TONS of other women) using my chosen shade of Pearl Blond. I am a natural blond but in recent years my hair has lost its once amazing natural color and now it is more dull than it is fantastic. My goal going into trying U Color was to get an awesome shade of blond, a few shades lighter than mine without looking toooooo too fake (a little fake is OK and welcomed). I am excited about a hair color that it supposedly long lasting, more vibrant and super easy to use. I am also looking for something that is easy and perhaps a little cleaner than my current (and to remain unnamed) at home color. The man is always complaining that I get color all over the place, despite my best efforts in keeping things contained. So with those hopes and dreams, I went into the bathroom to do the deed.

So how did I like it? How did my color come out?

So to look at this set, I was pretty psyched. Already it was different. First of all, they give you two set of the color packets, yes color packets. I was a little surprised by them only including one glove per packet but went with it.  I am used to a bottle type hair color, where you mix the color and the developer, shake it up and then apply to your hair. The U Color asked you to fold the color, developer and  equalizer packets over one another, then snip the tops off each one so that each packet dispenses at the same time. Easier said than done. When I lined everything up and snipped accross the three, it did not cut the developer so when I went to “smoosh” out, not every packet dispersed evenly. I was very careful and really thought that I did it correctly. I did not and since the directions were very clear in being sure that everything dispersed evenly, knowing I had lost some color and equalizer, I tossed the first set and decided to mix the second set of packets in a bowl so that I could finish the review.

At this point I am starting to get a little frustrated but forge ahead. I put the second set of packets in a bowl and mix it together. I use both gloves provided to apply the color to my hair. Here is where I realize why there are two packets. I was barely able to get enough color out of the remaining packet to cover my hair. It was good thing I just cut my hair Summer short or else I may not have had enough for full coverage. Here is where I made note that the scent of the hair color is MUCH better than my normal potent solution. This was literally a breathe of fresh air.  So I finished the application, set my timer for 25 minutes, rinsed, then blow dried.

The color? It’s nice. I am pretty happy that it was a good outcome. My roots were covered, the color does have a nice shine when it catches the light.  Will I switch over to U Color? I am not sure. I admittedly had some issues with the application but perhaps that is because I am a creature of habit and have been at the Home Color game for quite some time now. I should probably give it one more go ’round just for the pure fact that I did stretch the one packet and could probably have had a better experience. The color did leave my hair feeling healthy and not dry/brittle so that is definitely a plus. I will say to all of you that as you try at home color you always want to keep these things in mind as well as read the directions very carefully. As you can see, even the most season at home stylists can have issues.

Kit includes:

  • 2 Sachet Packets (6 Fl. Oz. total) including Color, Developer and Equalizer that comes ready to use
  • Mini Detail Brush
  • Latex Gloves
  • Illustrated Instructions

Tips on DIY Home Haircolor

I am the first to say that I have been adventurous and …ahem, sometimes impulsive with my hair styles and even hair colors. I come from a long line of women who take their hair into their own hands, especially when it comes to at home color care. So before you make some DIY decisions for your hair color, take a look at these tips on doing it right and with style!

Do a patch test. Before dyeing, apply color to a hidden chunk of hair behind your ear to get a preview of the results.
Protect your skin. To avoid staining your skin, rub petroleum jelly onto your hairline and ears. And wear gloves!
Apply it right. Aim the applicator at your scalp, work the color in from the roots to the ends, then comb through.
Set a timer. Leave dye on for the full amount of time listed in the instructions. Rinse with lukewarm water.

So, now that you’ve got the steps, are you feeling all sorts of fantasy hair color excited?? Browse some hair color options here, and then take a peek at these celebs who switched up their normal hair color routines: *Khloe Kardashian as a redhead *Lauren Conrad as a golden brunette *Emma Stone as a blonde *Michelle Williams in platinum *…and Juliette Lewis in blue!

Have any of you ladies switched up your color lately? What was your transformation, and how did it turn out? Anyone else planning on trying something new soon?

    New! Wella Professionals PASSIONISTA!

June 7th, 2011 by Andrea Palmer

Have you been seeing red lately? It’s all over Hollywood with the hottest young starlets brandishing red-hot tresses.

Blake Lively goes red for a launch party

I used to view red as a cozy warm winter color, but the punchy hues I’ve been seeing on the red carpets lately have changed my prejudice and opened my mind. The contrast of red against the vibrant colors of spring and summer are becoming more and more appealing, and starlets are brandishing the hue left and right.

The Wella Professionals Global Creative Team came together and based their newest hue off of the colors of seduction, passion and sensation. They have dubbed this creation: PASSIONISTA.  With red being the symbolic color of love I can definitely see the tie-in. “I wanted to capture the moment and the strength in the hair ” Josh Wood of the Global Creative team remarks.

Wella is encouraging stylists to take inspiration from this runway creation and embrace this trend of passionate red we’re seeing in Hollywood and on the catwalk.

From now until June 30th 2011, hair artists will have a chance to showcase their creations among the hair elite in the Wella Professionals Trend Vision 2011. This is a hair competition that allow the stylist to create and interpret one of the three Wella Trend Vision 2011 themes. For more information and entry rules please visit Wella.com

Are you planning on going red this season?

L’Oreal Colorist Secrets Crystal Clear Shine Boost Gloss System

June 24th, 2010 by The Fashionable Housewife

L’Oreal recently sent me a package with some of their new products in it for me to test and review. I haven’t had time to test everything in the box yet, but one of the things I can’t wait to try is the L’Oreal Colorist Secrets Shine Boost Gloss Treatment.

The Crystal Clear Shine System infuses hair with a boost of salon-quality shine in only 10 minutes. With the Hi-Moisture Deep Conditioner, shine lasts for up to 6 weeks. 100% ammonia free, Shine Gloss is a gentle way to infuse hair with brilliant, glossy shine without changing your colour results. Hair feels healthier from the minute you use it.

I haven’t tried it yet because I recently got the Simply Smooth Brazilian Keratin Treatment which was supposed to last for 4 months and I was given a special shampoo and conditioner with it and told not to use anything else. Soooo I was hesitant to try something like this for fear it might ruin or at the least, shorten the lifespan of my treatment.

I got the Brazilian Keratin Treatment in late February and it’s supposed to last for 4 months… I think it’s wearing out now so I’ll probably wait another month or so and then try this product to see what it does for my hair. I usually have pretty dull hair, but the Brazilian Keratin Treatment made it very shiny and glossy. I;m hoping the this product from L’Oreal will give me similar results!

Get it on Amazon.com for $8.49

Have you tried L’Oreal Crystal Clear Shine System? Does it sound like something you’d be interested in?
