Golden Globes Hair Trend I Loved

January 17th, 2012 by Lucie Amberg

There’s plenty of discussion on the web about Golden Globes fashion, and while there were some nice looks, nothing knocked me out (although I wholeheartedly agree with Sara Cornell’s Helen Mirren accolades– Love her!).

Overall, color was trending, particularly purple and green, along with bridal looks, metallic accents, and a whole lot of reliably flattering mermaid silhouettes. Not without merit, but I’ve seen it before. In fact, many of these trends have been cycling (and recycling) for the past few years. Maybe we’re in a red-carpet rut…

I was very excited by a beauty trend, though. Many women were sporting some version of Rita Hayworth hair:

Long, soft waves with a committed side part. Looks effortlessly pretty and polished at the same time. Check it out:

Diane Lane

Julianne Moore

Madeleine Stowe

Nicole Kidman

Madonna and Andrea Riseborough

They all wear it well– a good reminder that simple styling can be your best friend in a formalwear situation. Another interesting point is that all of these women are over 40. Now, the idea that women over 40 should NEVER wear their hair long is about as relevant as a Virginia Slim, but savvy over-40 fashionistas know that long hair can be tricky. Get it wrong and you could end up looking very Real Housewives or– even worse –sister wives.

So what do you think? Do you like this look on the red carpet or do you prefer more structured ‘dos? And how do you feel about long hair vs. short hair as you (oh-so-gracefully) age?

Harajuku…White Socks…?

When Gwen Stefani speaks fashion, I usually listen.  (I listen to her music too, but I especially like her sense of style.)  Granted some of her outfits are totally out there, but I love the way she takes different elements creates a unique and unified look.  Which is why I’m having a hard time with this particular ensemble:

To me, white socks scream gym class and tennis courts.  Not “I’m off to a business meeting with my agent…” or “I’m leaving the courthouse having just won a major settlement against the paparazzi or something…”  Clearly the socks are meant to be seen; why else would she be wearing crop trousers?  I was about to cast this outfit off as the equivalent of a bad hair day, when I say this picture:

In both pictures EVERYTHING is working until you get to the ankles.  The socks break up – and not in a good way – great colors and statement pieces.  Love the funky sunglasses, the oversize jackets, the big boxy totes.  Then Wham!  WHITE SOCKS!  Yuck.  Not flattering.   Would someone please tell me when white socks became a fashion statement for anyone past the 4th grade? Am I the only one who feels this way?  Leave us a comment and let us know your opinion of white socks on the catwalk…

Fashion Conundrum Update

Elizabeth & James Manor Wedge Ankle Bootie

Well, I’m sure you were all waiting with baited breath…I ended up buying the ankle wedge booties (no surprise there – I’m TERRIBLE at resolutions…) and am pleased to report back that they are totally worth it!  The style is available at several e-tailers, including My Habit, Shopbop, Piperlime and Zappos.  While my favorite color was the Taupe Suede at My Habit:

Taupe Suede Manor Ankle Wedge Bootie $176 at MyHabit.com

I went with the black suede because I wasn’t crazy about the return policy at My Habit in case the boots didn’t fit or I hated them.  Piperlime has them in Mocha Leather (not wild about it) and the price is almost $125 MORE!

Mocha Leather, $299 at Piperlime.com

Originally priced at all sites for $375, and currently ranging in price from  $325 to  $176, I decided to order from Zappos where they were listed for  $177.  I ordered them at 7 pm and no joke, they were on my front door step the following afternoon – less than 24 hours after ordering them!  Way to go, Zappos!   After several outfit pairings I’m happy to report that they look really cute with skinny jeans and boot cut jeans, and add the perfect rocker/bad ass vibe to a very full plaid maxi skirt that trends a little too much toward Ma Wilder for my taste.  They are surprisingly comfortable, and don’t make my arches or heels ache after hours of wearing.  The quality of the leather is very good, and the laces and lace holes are substantial and well cut.  Best of all, paired with dark tights or leggings, they make you legs look a mile long…never a bad thing!

And unlike a certain pair of uber high wedge booties sold by a certain Fashion It Girl on her own monthly shoe site, you can actually drive in these because the sole is flat and you can feel the gas and brake pedals!

So all in all I’m giving the style and the shopping experience 5 stars.  If you want to go on a fashion adventure of your own, this is one that I would recommend!

We think that Giuliana Rancic is looking FABULOUS, especially after just having undergone surgery for Breast Cancer. To look this beautiful after having gone through probably one of the hardest things ever? We love it and think she is a great role model! This Get the Look for Less is honor of her fabulousness!

Get the Look for Less, Ali Larter

It’s so weird that it is now January here in the Northeast yet we are still having some somewhat MILD weather! I stocked up on the sweaters and battened down the hatches as far as just pulling the sweater card and winterizing my wardrobe. But when we are given the opportunity to let the public see our winter wardrobes, we need to step it up… like Ali Larter. She looks effortlessly gorge and casual at the same time. Get her look for less!

Get the Look for Less, Paula Patton

With New Year’s Eve coming up we are all trying to figure out what to wear! Guh, so when we saw Paula Patton at a press event for the most recent Mission Impossible flick, we were absolutely gaga over her look! Obvi, I can’t go out and buy Moschino but I can most certainly try to create her look for less!
