Leave A Comment There’s plenty of discussion on the web about Golden Globes fashion, and while there were some nice looks, nothing knocked me out (although I wholeheartedly agree with Sara Cornell’s Helen Mirren accolades– Love her!).
Overall, color was trending, particularly purple and green, along with bridal looks, metallic accents, and a whole lot of reliably flattering mermaid silhouettes. Not without merit, but I’ve seen it before. In fact, many of these trends have been cycling (and recycling) for the past few years. Maybe we’re in a red-carpet rut…
I was very excited by a beauty trend, though. Many women were sporting some version of Rita Hayworth hair:

They all wear it well– a good reminder that simple styling can be your best friend in a formalwear situation. Another interesting point is that all of these women are over 40. Now, the idea that women over 40 should NEVER wear their hair long is about as relevant as a Virginia Slim, but savvy over-40 fashionistas know that long hair can be tricky. Get it wrong and you could end up looking very Real Housewives or– even worse –sister wives.

Without adding too much hoopla to the post event fashion fallout of the Golden Globes, I must a take a minute to salute Helen Mirren. She is my idol. How fabulous did she look last night!:
Classy, elegant, serene. This is how it’s done, ladies. Not to mention the fact that she is 66 and can STILL rock a bikini AND a leopard print dress with a bomber jacket!

When Gwen Stefani speaks fashion, I usually listen. (I listen to her music too, but I especially like her sense of style.) Granted some of her outfits are totally out there, but I love the way she takes different elements creates a unique and unified look. Which is why I’m having a hard time with this particular ensemble:

To me, white socks scream gym class and tennis courts. Not “I’m off to a business meeting with my agent…” or “I’m leaving the courthouse having just won a major settlement against the paparazzi or something…” Clearly the socks are meant to be seen; why else would she be wearing crop trousers? I was about to cast this outfit off as the equivalent of a bad hair day, when I say this picture:

In both pictures EVERYTHING is working until you get to the ankles. The socks break up – and not in a good way – great colors and statement pieces. Love the funky sunglasses, the oversize jackets, the big boxy totes. Then Wham! WHITE SOCKS! Yuck. Not flattering. Would someone please tell me when white socks became a fashion statement for anyone past the 4th grade? Am I the only one who feels this way? It’s so weird that it is now January here in the Northeast yet we are still having some somewhat MILD weather! I stocked up on the sweaters and battened down the hatches as far as just pulling the sweater card and winterizing my wardrobe. But when we are given the opportunity to let the public see our winter wardrobes, we need to step it up… like Ali Larter. She looks effortlessly gorge and casual at the same time. Get her look for less!
