Need a Great Pair of Summer Shoes?

I have to admit that when the weather warms up, I spend a lot of time in flip flops.  They are easy to slip on and off, comfortable and a “must have” for the pool.  Unfortunately, they are an item that is a little “too easy” to wear.  Meaning, they can be end up being a mom’s “go to” item like sweatpants and tee shirts can be.  Here are a few summer shoes that I found to be both stylish and comfortable for the mom on the go.

Low Wedge Espadrille Sandal

Bandolino Ubetcha Espadrille Sandal ($70 at Piperlime) is a great choice for any stylish woman on the go.  The heel is low enough to be comfortable but also provide a little height to make your legs look fabulous in summer shorts and skirts.

Slip-On Sneaker

This slip-on sneaker from Naturalizer ($60 at Piperlime) is a great choice for times when you are looking for more support and cushioning than a flip flop can provide.  I have a similar pair and wore them for an entire week at Disney World with my family last year and my feet felt great all week.

Peep Toe Flat

The Get Outta Town peep-toe flat from Seychelles ($80 at Piperlime) is a fashionable alternative to the sandal in the summer months.  I also really love the versatile pewter color which will allow you to pair with many different colors in your summer wardrobe.

One item you may have noticed that I left off this list is the Croc.  Unless you are under the age of 6 or out in your garden, please do not wear crocs out in public.  They may be comfortable, but they are not, I repeat, NOT fashionable!

I hope some of the suggestions above will offer some inspiration for your summer footwear.  There are a number of cute alternatives to the basic flip flop and croc that will make you the talk of your play group.

What to Wear for a Spring/Summer Wedding

Spring is here and love is in the air. Even if it’s not in the air around you, chances are you’re on the guest list for at least one wedding in the next couple months. Weddings are tough. You need to look good, but not too good. You can’t show up the bride, after all!

What you wear also depends on the time of the wedding.  Morning and afternoon weddings are typically more casual than evening ones.  For casual weddings, go for a bright colors, shorter lengths, and flat shoes. This Betsey Johnson dress is a great option because it of its light and playful look. Plus when you choose a print, you are less likely to look like a wannabe bridesmaid if you happen to wear a similar color.

As I mentioned before, I would wear flats to an early wedding for a more casual look.  Flats have made a comeback in the last few years, so you have plenty of options. I like this pair from Juicy Couture because the pouf detail makes them look a little more chic.

When you’re attending an evening wedding, you are usually expected to appear in formalwear. Go for darker colors, longer hemlines, and heels. I like this black dress because it has a touch of personality without going overboard.

If, like me, you dread an entire evening in heels, pack a pair of Footzyrolls. They are ballet flats that roll up into a compact little ball and fit nicely in almost any purse. You can read more about Footzyrolls in my review on Prom Mafia.

Still unsure about what to wear?  Remember that moderately conservative is always a safe way to go and only the bride gets to wear white. Follow those two tips and you’ll be a-ok!

L.A. Stylist Mom Picks: Five Under $50 From Ruche!

L.A. Stylist Mom Picks: Five Under $50 From Ruche!

Rosey Adeline Cardigan $49.99

Espresso Large Hobo Bag $38.99

Mist Ruffle Tux Pocket Tank $36.99

Chenin Grape Scarf in Vanilla $22.99

Love Lace Navy Embroidered Tie Dress $46.99

I freaking love Ruche. It’s like the cheap Anthropologie, chock full of all things gorgeous and girlie and…reasonably priced! Most things are around the fifty-dollar mark, but you can find items for a bit more and (holla!) mostly less.

I think that my very fave has to be the Adeline cardigan for the sheer fact that it looks like a birthday cake, and who’s not a sucker for cake? (If you’re not, keep it to yourself.) Perfect right now with boots and leggings, it will easily pull double duty come springtime over your favorite dress with sandals. Did I mention that I heart it?

The Hobo is a no-brainer since it can easily house all the crap you keep insisting you can’t live without, including Pull-Ups and sippy cups for those of you who no longer need a full-blown diaper bag, but could still use the room. For forty bucks it makes sense, especially since its classic-hippie chic style won’t be passé any time soon. Get it.

I’m crazy about the detailing on the Pocket tank; teeny ruffles and bows are a Ruche signature, adding just enough eye candy to dress up an otherwise boring staple. It’s a versatile option with jeans or leggings over a long sleeved tee, and in the warmer months teamed up with a flowy cotton skirt. Did I mention that gray is the new black?

Ahhh the grape scarf, be still my heart. It’s just plain pretty, and the perfect match to un-mom a mom outfit of jeans and a tee. Nothing short of transforming, it’ll make you appear put together in lieu of put out on those pesky school morning drop offs…

Let’s not forget about this delicate dress in the surprise shade of navy – so much less obvious than black and way more modern. Although it appears to be fairly dressy, I’d wear it into the ground this summer with a pair motorcycle boots. You heard me correctly. There’s nothing I adore more than the dichotomy of an uber-feminine piece along side something tough, edgy, unexpected and above all? Chic. Ruche rules.

Don’t Purchase This: rsvp Melbourne Boots

As the snowy season approached, I figured it was time to buy another pair of fashionable, yet fairly priced boots. A friend of mine directed me to 6pm.com where I found a nice looking pair of rsvp Melbourne boots in black. I was so excited because I got them in the middle of September for a great price! I wore them around to work and school very satisfied with my purchase and the price I got them for, well lets just say I THOUGHT I was satisfied.

rsvp - Melbourne 10 (Black) - FootwearA few weeks after purchasing them, both of the heels on the boots BROKE APART on the inside! Then about a month and a half later, the sole of one of the boots BEGAN DETACHING itself from the rest of the shoe! These shoes fell apart so quickly, leaving them completely susceptible to water damage. I accidentally stepped into a puddle while crossing the street and my shoes AND feet got soaked!!! I could feel the water sloshing around inside the boots and my socks and feet were soaked for the rest of the day. At this point I am BETTER OFF BARE-FOOT!

I am so incredibly disappointed with these boots. I have had them for only 3 months and they look like I have had them for 3 years!

I will NEVER buy another pair of RSVP shoes EVER again!

Putting Your Best Curves Forward For a Fashionable Plus Sized Holiday

Say hello to Marie, who is guest posting for us today to share a little insight on plus size fashion!

As plus size fashions become more readily available, we find ourselves with more options, choices, and motivations for wanting to put our best curve forward!  But where does one begin to fashion her curves with the abundance of new found options?

Accentuate the Positive and Flatter the Rest!

What I mean by that?  We all have “problem areas” places on our bodies that we may not necessary love, but we also have curves that we love, whether it be the neck, legs, chest or waist. The trick to flaunting your curves with confidence is dressing to your curves’ potential.

How do you do this?  Well, with a little strategic dressing and these tips and tricks, you can be on your way to putting your best curve forward!

But before you dress to put your best curve forward, it is very important that you lay the right foundation! Foundations are the building blocks to every wardrobe, whether straight or  blessed with curves. The perfect fitting bra and shaper will allow clothes to fall as they should, skimming the curves in every right place, without gathering or bunching on each curve!

An ill-fitting bra can destroy the posture, give you “double cleavage,” and can kill the overall look of your top or dress!

Designers such as Hips and Curves, Elomi, Oola Lingerie, Spanx, Yummie Tummie, and Heavenly Curves all offer perfect foundations that cater specifically to your curves!

SO which area are you looking to accentuate or flatter? Read on for some tips and tricks by region of your curves!

Your arms

If you love them:

kische2Your arms, whether shapely, firm, or loved just as they are, opt for sleeveless tops and cutaways that will bring attention to your lovely limbs, and add interest and depth to your complete look!

  • Opt for a variety of sleeve lengths (sleeveless, short sleeved, and strapless)
  • Do be bold in the season’s latest trends with the one shoulder, sexy cutouts, and sparkly sequined sleeveless numbers!
  • With a great bra for support, be daring in a strapless sparkly number for the holidays!

kischeIf they are not your favorite:

Layering strategically is always a great way to detract attention away from your arms! V- necks, patterns and prints can bring attention away from your arms and to you lovely face, collarbone, or wherever you wish to divert attention to, by flattering your favorite asset!

  • Do NOT wear bulky and shapely knits, as this will only detract from your x-factor!
  • Stay away from short sleeve tops that button at the bottom, as it will cut into your arm- only to appear larger
  • Do wear sleeves that skim your arms, in lightweight wools and cottons, that add a soft shape to them.

Your Chest

wrap dressIf you love them:

Your cleavage is your killer asset and you want to flaunt it with style and class? V-neck tops and dresses are the immediate way to go! Not too low of a V will ooze just enough sex appeal and confidence without over doing it!

  • Do wear interesting necklines that open up your frame without plunging too low.
  • To avoid crossing the line of being risqué, your v-neck should not go lower than your sternum (the bone that is at the top center of your bust line)
  • Surplice tops (tops that criss-cross), Wrap Dresses, and V-neck lines are always a go
  • Empire waist tops and dress add a playful line to your chest without being distracting

If you wish to camouflage:

Being blessed with a full bosom can, to some- bring attention not desired, and this is okay.  So, how do you detract?

  • Avoid button-up blouses as they can at time attract the eye to the center of the chest
  • Opt for boat necks and crew neck, as these can detract the eye from venturing
  • Layering with a cardigan, a tailored jacket to accentuate the curves will add depth to your outfit without hiding your curves
  • Also avoid extremely fitted tops as they tend to maximize the fullness of your chest, instead, opt for tops that gently graze your curves

Your Waist

You want to accentuate

Are you little in the middle and you got much back? Playing to your hourglass frame is a cinch!

  • Off the shoulder tops, V-necklines, tailored jackets, and feminine dresses rev up the voluptuous factor
  • On the bottom, don pencil skirts, tailored trousers, and additional variations of a gently fitted clothing will play to your extremely feminine frame
  • Fitted dresses that open up your frame up top, highlight the waist and flatter your curves are sure to win

To create a waist:

It is strategic when it comes to creating a waist, and you will find, either fuller in the middle or straight up and down, that creating a waist can be had for many!

  • Opt for ruched (gathered) pieces that gather either on one side or both to create the illusion of a nipped waist
  • Tailored jackets that are shaped with a waist are a go
  • A dress with shape built in with darting, waist details, or cinching all assist with creating a waistline
  • Shapes such as an A-line skirt coupled with a V-neck top create a visual hourglass frame
  • Steer away from pencil skirts, high-waist pants, and skinny bottoms as they will only bring focus to the fullness  (or lack thereof)

Your Thighs and Calves

You wish to flaunt your gams:

You got legs and you know how to use them. Shapely, toned, soft, or supple, you love your legs and want to work with what you have been blessed with. How do you accentuate these lovely legs of yours?

  • Opt for a balance  of clothing! Should you wear a short skirt, it should be no shorter than your fingertips to keep it classy.
  • If you are bearing your legs, do not bear your breast, arms, shoulders… A balance is always key (even if you are going out to party!)
  • If you are taller, opt for mid thigh to knee length to elongate the legs. Should you be on the shorter side, keep your skirts or shorts at mid-thigh to elongate the legs.
  • Boot cut and skinny trousers or jeans give your legs a mile long look

You want to play down:

Whether you feel you have “thunder thighs,” “chicken legs,” or “tree trunks,” playing with certain silhouettes can enhance the curvature of your lovely gams

  • Tights can be your best asset, especially textured tights and opaques, play to the illusion of shape
  • Shapewear, especially those that fall to the knee, will keep your curves smooth and tucked away!
  • With denim, opt for boot cut and steer away from an extreme flare, as this will only emphasize the thickness of your thighs
  • Wide leg trousers are a must and an essential to your wardrobe, these skim your hips, and drape away from your thighs!

These tips and tricks only skim the beginning of putting your best Curve Forward!  Learning how to be confident in your curves becomes easier as you equip yourself with the tools and step out of your comfort zone every now and then, as you may never know what newfound curve suits you!

Fall 2009 Trend: Zipper Skinny Ankle Jeans

Hey Fashionable Housewife readers! My name is JP and I run a little blog called Denim Debutante. How did it start?

Well, let’s keep it simple and just say that I have a ridiculous obsession with denim that sometimes gets… a little out of hand. With this obsession, however, comes a lot of experience, both with brands and styles. So, that’s why I’m here… to share a little bit of my wisdom (which sounds really silly when I say it).

One of the biggest trends (and one of my current go-to looks) to pop up this year was the Skinny Ankle Zipper jean. It’s got a modern-meets-throwback feel, and is a style that looks great on most figures. But, like many things these days, the prices aren’t always the best… so, I’ve chosen two options for testing out this style: one high end, celebrity-friendly and the other is an affordable (yet still great-fitting and fabulous!) alternate.

First, let’s start with the expensive.

Genetic Denim James Recessive Zipper Jeans

James Recessive Zipper Jeans from Genetic Denim: $187.00 at ShopBop.com

Genetic Denim is known for great fits and looks that are almost always picked up by the latest starlet… so, with that, comes a bit of a higher price tag. I’m a big bargain hunter, so I snagged my pair of Genetic Denim Skinny Ankle Zipper jeans on sale, but these are the newest style. Pretty, aren’t they? :)

The Midnight Mass Stretch Knit Skinny with Long Zipper by Blank Denim: $57.00 at Karmaloop.com

Blank is one of those brands that shows you that you don’t have to pay big bucks for good quality… and these Midnight Mass Zipper Skinnies are a great example of fashion-forward looks without an offensive price tag. These are super on-trend, but won’t kill your bank account. Talk about a great combo!

I personally own both of these brands, and like them both quite a bit. I do lean toward the Genetics slightly (the detailing on the pair I own is superior to Blank, in my opinion), but for more than three times the price? You can buy two pairs of the Blanks, tie-dye one, and be ridiculously trendy… if you’re into that kind of thing!
