Motherhood Movie for the Cure

Posted on: October 23, 2009 @ 8:38 am     2 Comments »

Motherhood

Hey ladies, get a sitter or leave the kids with your man. Treat yourselves to a movie and when you use Fandango, you’re helping fight Breast Cancer!

For every Motherhood ticket sold on Fandango.com between October 23 – November 6, $1 will be donated to the Massachusetts Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Starring one of my most favorite fashionistas (and mother herself), Uma Thurman stars in MOTHERHOOD,  a bittersweet comedy that distills the dilemmas of the maternal state into the trials and tribulations of one pivotal day. MOTHERHOOD forms a genre of one — no other movie has dedicated itself in quite this way to probing exactly what it takes to be a mother, with both wry humor and an acute sense of authenticity. From writer/director Katherine Dieckmann, the acclaimed filmmaker of ‘Diggers’ and ‘A Good Baby,’ comes ‘Motherhood,’ starring Uma Thurman, Anthony Edwards and Minnie Driver.

Film:                MOTHERHOOD
Distributor:       Freestyle Releasing
Release Date:   Friday, October 23
Genre:              Comedy
Rating:               PG-13
Trailer:               http://motherhoodthefilm.com

I would have gone to see the movie anyways, but now I’ll buy my tickets through Fandango for a cause!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Let’s Make a Difference!

Posted on: October 09, 2009 @ 8:50 am     3 Comments »

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month; Let’s be selfless and charitable…. oh and also let’s do a little shopping (for a cause)!

header1Coming from a family affected by breast cancer, I am here to tell you that building awareness,  helping fund research and education and spreading the good word is of the utmost importance. The Fashionable Housewife and The Fashionable Gal are committed to support the cause and TA DAAAAAAAAH have launched Fashionable Gals for a Cure. This event  will include four weeks filled with prizes from some great sponsors as well as an auction. This crazy awesome event  will help provide awareness and raise money to find a cure for Breast Cancer which is amaaaaaazing.

For every dollar donated through the Susan G. Komen page on The Fashionable Gal, the donor will receive an entry to win a prize package of their choice.  Multiple entries on multiple prizes are allowable. Generous sponsors have donated hundreds of dollars worth of prizes to make up nearly 20 prize packages valued at $150. Individual prizes over $150 will be auctioned off in late October. Prizes include everything from jewelry to bras to hair care to gift cards- and everything in between! The prizes will make wonderful gift ideas or a way to pamper the entrants themselves!

Participants (and sponsors!) are encouraged to help promote Fashionable Gals for a Cure on their own websites and blogs. Fashionable Media, Inc. has specially designed buttons and banners for their use. The person who makes the biggest donation will receive $100 to SuperShoes.com and the person with the most referrals will win $100 to EdenFantasys.com.

Sounds cool right? Well that is because it is cool! Can I get a what what for raising much needed funds for a spectacularly great cause? Every little bit counts…

My New Favorite: Martin + Osa

Posted on: October 06, 2009 @ 9:33 am     1 Comment »

So I happened upon a store that I have got to share with the people… I had never heard of Martin + Osa before but they are a classic American cool for the classic American gal.  Outrageous prices? Nopers. Ill fitted clothing? Ummmm EXACT opposite. I had one of those experiences where everything I tried on looked wonderful and I had to weed things out! That is always a good problem to have.

So there was this couple, Martin and Osa Johnson who were these adventurer/ explorer types. They traveled the world, they were rugged outdoors types who also had an uptown apartment in Manhattan. They were cool cats.  American Eagle decided to spin off a concept based on the adventures of Martin and Osa while keeping things very classic and stylin’ for the adult. (Teenagers would be a little less interested I would think…)

They have some GREAT jeans and great deals ALL the time; 30% off of sale here, free scarf with jeans purchase there, $59.50 jeans weekend… Mama likes! It is different every week. I signed up for their preferred member (basically just giving them my email) and now they tell me about all the cool deals AND send coupons! Holla!

I am excited to have found such a cool place with cool clothes… and I can also shop online (they actually have more than offered at my local M+O). Check them out because, afterall, a girl can never have to many favorite stores!

Check out some in store and online deals:

Cotton Cardigan Sweater, $39.95, Osa Skinny Jeans, $89.50, Perfect V Neck Sweater, $29.95, Motocross Jeans, $110.00, Pleated Silk Dress, $39.95, Soybean Ribbed Cardigan, $39.50, Pleated Denim Skirt $49.95, Rolled U Neck Sweater $39.50, Boot Fit Marine Attitude, $59.50

My Shoes LOVE Skinny Jeans

Posted on: September 30, 2009 @ 1:30 pm     No Comments »

skinnyjeans

Not a huge fan of the skinny jean trend? Actually kind of depressed that it seems to be a staple in fashion these days?  I was not a supporter until… I realized that all of my shoes love to be paired with them!

Being that I am a curvy girl, I immediately thought that the skinny jean was not the right fit for me but lo and behold, I tried a pair on with my favorite FaryllRobin flats and I was smitten as a kitten. Take a gander at the looks that you can pull off, if you just give them the shot that they deserve!

Skinny Ankle Zip Skinny, Forever 21, in stores and online, $12.50

Skinny  Blank NYC white faded stretch skinny jeans, bluefly.com, $32.39

Skinny  Celebrity Pink’s stretch Denim Skinny, Overstock.com, $28.99

Skinny  Martin+Osa Skinny Fit Jean, online and in stores, $99.50

Skinny  Forever 21 Daylight Skinny Jean, online and in select stores, $26.90

Payless Shoes, give them a chance!

Posted on: August 05, 2009 @ 9:12 am     4 Comments »

Payless ShoeSourceListen here girls, I know that that name brand pair of Jimmy Choo’s or Prada pumps are your babies (well besides your actual children) but lest us not forget that  cute shoes don’t have to be terribly expensive. I, of course, go the distance when I am buying a new pair of running sneakers or a pair of heels for a black tie wedding but when it comes to every day wear, there are affordable options that can actually be comfortable as well. Please trust me when I say that Payless Shoe Source and Payless.com have got a little somethin’ something to offer, especially when you might want to follow a trend that maybe possibly won’t be a classic? Why spend the major dough on a fad when you can save it for a pair that will last you years.

The shoes that have made my summer? Out of the 7 pair I have bought in the past few months, 3 pairs were from Payless.

Payless

The Fio Turquoise Scarlet Fringe Sandal came into my life when I first saw them on a Payless commercial on tv. I immediately saw them and said, “Whaaaa? Payless?” I went to my local store and to my dismay they only had them in a size too big and a size too small. The lovely associate indicated that they were a popular pair of shoes. Why did everyone else have to think the same way that I did? Buuuuuuuuut Payless offers the option to ship to your local store to avoid shipping costs (or they’ll ship to your house for a minimal $5.95 shipping). I ordered up my size 7 Scarlett Fringies and they called me a week later. I never looked back. I paid $24.99 but they are now on sale for $9.99 (with a bunch of sizes still left) so snag a pair before the summer is done!

070059_6_700x700

The alice + olivia for Payless Beatrix Patent Platform Sandal is just ultra cool if you ask me. I paid $38.00 for these bad boys but they are now on sale for $19.99. A steal if you ask me. I have to say that although they don’t look like the utmost in comfort, I will attest to them being as comfortable as heels can be. Just make sure that you get your true size.

070313_6_700x700

The Dexter Lynn Chop-Out Wedge is just a plain cute pair of sandals. Sundresses, summer, skirts, shorts and jeans… You can wear them with anything. For real. Was $26.99 but now are on sale for $14.99. Holla!

Check out some of the other rad styles (besides my favs) they have available now:

Abaete for Payless Evelynn Slingback now $19.99, Maria Gladiator Sandal Now $24.99, Karney Platform Sandal now $26.99, alice + olivia for Payless Claire Sandal now $19.99, Henna Gladiator Wedge now $24.99 and Fiona Ballet Flat, now $12.99

Need Fashion Inspiration?

Lookbook

I have recently stumbled upon a really cool site that anyone interested in fashion might want to take a look at. Lookbook.nu is a website where people from over 80+ countries around the world post their own unique fashion styles that they themselves have put together. It is the people’s lookbook with fashion from the streets. If you ask me, the best fashion is the our fashion, the stuff we see every day and are inspired by.

Lookbook

Some outfits are comprised of  pieces from hot labels but you would be surprised how people can pull together the coolest outfits with things from Goodwill or their mother’s closet. They also make note of where their pieces are from, whether recently acquired at Gap or passed down from their sister’s prom.  Do yourself a favor and check out Lookbook.  Everyday people  really are the heart of fashion. We are the ones who rock it in real life!

Must Haves For Your Summer Bag!

Posted on: July 10, 2009 @ 6:26 am     3 Comments »

Got a call from a girlfriend to go out to a trendy bar for drinks but totally didn’t plan for it? Your man calls you to tell you he got a baby sitter and is taking you out right after work? In a spot, every girl should have the tools to put together a face for a night on the town or in the very least have what’s needed to just get by. Take a look at what is in my bag for a bind taking into consideration that I don’t carry small bags (wink wink)…

Bag

Your skin’s health is precious; everyone will say so. For an impromptu day in the sun or for regular use, protect your skin using the newest from Neutrogena. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock Lotion, SPF 85, in stores and online $11.99 offers protection from harmful UV rays as well as offering a lightweight option for those like me that don’t like the heavy feel of normal sunblocks.

Eeeeeek! Need lipstick but don’t have any with you? Moisture and tint in one is the best option for keeping your lips healthy as well as offering a quick option to refresh your morning makeup.  You can use it during the day without looking trashy and you can use it at night to add that little somethin’ somethin’. Try  C.O. Bigelow Vitamin Mentha Lip Balm, Baby Pink Mint, Bath and Body Works in store and online, $7.50.

Even though it is summer, I still cannot seem to keep my hands hydrated at all times . I use and keep with me Burt’s Bees Shea Butter Hand Creme, available in stores and online, $12.99 to keep my hands soft and smelling sweet. I can’t hold hands with my man without it! Try other Burt’s Bees products as well. They are simply lovely, of good quality and all have pretty great natural fragrances.

A quick switch from day to evening can be as simple as a great mascara. I use and adore  Maybelline Colossial Volume Express Mascara, in glam black, in stores and online, $6.99, because I have movie star eyelashes in a minute flat…. and to any outsider I look like I planned my make-up in advance.

Never fear for freshening your complexion either… I always carry Almay Clear Complexion Pressed Powder, in stores and online, $12.99 because it is perfect for concealing those pesky blemishes that were hard enough to cover when you left in the morning. It keeps me feeling a little better about my face even if my face is fighting me tooth and nail.

Dove Go Fresh Body Mist, in stores and online, $4.49 is perfect for a refreshing scent that is not overwhelming, comes in a small travel sizish spray and acts as a deodorant as well. After a day in the office, chasing the kids, or just simply sweating, this is perfect for a gal on the go!

scunci Salon Bobby Pins are a necessity for me and pretty much any girl I know who has hair on her head. They are super affordable and now come in a really convenient travel case so that you don’t end up with a purse full of bobby pins floating around. I have been caught in a bad hair day that could only be tamed by a trip to the bathroom with my bobby pins and tap water. Available in stores and online, $2.99

Summer Hair Trends 2009: The Ponytail

Posted on: June 25, 2009 @ 6:54 am     1 Comment »

Man, I love ponytails. Don’t you? They are too easy to do and get your hair out of the way whilst exercising. They are also great when you are running around with the kids. Oh and they are cool when you need to wash your face… and that is all they are good for.

UNTRUE! Ponytails are so versatile, girls! Can I get a HOLLA for the Ponytails?! Take a look at these super stylin’ ponytail dos, no longer the don’ts.

Whether you are getting ready for work or planning a night out with your man, the ponytail can be dressed up, dressed down, dressed sideways, dressed anyways…

Some tips for your summer ponytail? Depending on the ponytail you want to achieve there are varying ways of executing the do. What kind of pony are you going to be today?

Simple, Sleek Pony

Kate Winslet Ponytail

Simple and sleek, this ponytail is exactly that. A do that can go from day to night, with just a change of clothes. Wanna keep that do looking frizz free? Try Fekkai Marine Summer Hair Zero-Humidity Frizz Control, available in stores and at Sephora.com, $23.00

Textured, Tussled Pony

ponytail-hairstyles2

Whether your hair has natural texture or needs your help in that area, securing your volume into a ponytail can be a great solution to a night out hair dilemma. Pump up the volume with Matrix Amplify Volumizing Shampoo, available in stores and online, $18.00

High, Perfectly Placed Pony

ponytail-hairstyles3

Brushing your hair up into a high ponytail offers a spin on the classic, sleek pony. Want hold AND  shine like Lucy’s? Bring it on home with Aussie Dual Personality Hi Hold + Hi Shine Hair Spray, available at your local drugstore and online, $3.99

Casual, Low Pony

Cameron Diaz Ponytail

Securing your ponytail close to the nape of your neck offers a casual yet still fashionable do for daily wear. Keep your locks soft and manageable with Just for Me, Soft & Beautiful Hair Milk Conditioner, available at your local pharmacy and online, $4.99

Kickin’ Party Pony

rihanna_high_ponytail_hairstyle36

Partyin’ with your girls tonight? Dry your hair upside down  and spray your favorite hair spray in to get some natural volume before you throw your hair in a ponytail. Spray and go with Aussie Sprunch Catch the Wave Hair Spray, available in stores and online, $3.50

Pony with Accessories

ponytail-hairstyles6jpg

A casual style such as the ponytail can be glammed up with a simple ribbon, glitzy clip or stylin’ headband. Try hair accessories from the super affordable Sam Moon Trading Company out of Dallas TX. From hair elastics to hott headbands, they have an awesome selection for any gal on the go.

HAIR TIP: Switch the ponytails up! If you wear your hair at the top of your head one day, the next time try wearing it a few inches below your prior pony.  This prevents consistent wear and tear with elastic bands and pulling of delicate strands at the very same base point of your ponytail.  Repeated offender ponies at the very same place will weaken the roots and may lead to rips, tears and knotting in your gorgeous locks. Also, remember that hair is most delicate and prone to breakage when wet.  If you wrap your hair into a pony while it’s still wet or damp, please use extra care.

Summer Hair Trends 2009: The Bob

Posted on: June 24, 2009 @ 7:00 am     2 Comments »

Have you been itching to get a new hairdo? Want a change from the same ol’ same ol’? Why not the bob? The bob is in with variations for every hair type and every personality. From classic and sleek to edgy and rocker, the bob is more versatile than ever.

The Classic Bob

Simple and easy to maintain, the classic bob frames the face and gives its wearer a sophisticated look for any occasion.

The Layered Bob

Adding a little or a lot of texture to a bob can take the classic to a whole new level. Having your stylist use a razor on the bottom edges of your hair can give added texture and a few more options when styling. Lightly layered to heavily, the bob is the type of style that can handle them all.

The Edgy Bob

Layers galore, short and choppy, the Bob can be sassy with some edge.

Victoria Beckham in Victoria Beckham Launches DVb, Denim And Sunglasses At Saks Fifth Avenue

The Lengthy Bob

For the ladies who are afraid to commit to a shorter style, never fear. The bob can be a great medium length do. Add some light layers or highlights to make the bob your own.

The Bob with bangs

From blunt bangs to tapered side bangs, the addition can really change the look of your style.

Looking to style your bob? Some great products are on the market for premium hold and with hair healthy attributes.

For added volume, try 1. L’ Oreal Vive Pro Glossy Style Glossy Volume Mousse, in stores or online, $4.99, 2. PUREOLOGY ROOTLIFT Spray Hair Mousse, in stores and online, $23.99 or the 3. John Freida Luxurious Volume Lavish Root Booster, available at your local pharmacy or online, $6.99.

To style your bob with hold to last all the live long day, try 1. untitled

Building your ideal wardrobe can be tricky when you are on a budget, especially when it’s not just you that you need to clothe. A smart woman looks for deals, discounts, coupons and more in order to save her money on her favorite clothes, accessories, trinkets and make-up. Always looking for a bargain is not just specifically for shopping your favorite store’s clearance rack or sales flyers. Don’t discount the finds that are abound at consignment shops, Goodwill stores and your nearest Vintage clothes boutique. With a little luck and some shopping fervor, you can go designer for less; and with something unique that you can be sure you won’t get you caught in a “Who wore it better” moment.

Finding your local shop is not difficult especially with the internet at our fingertips. A quick search and I found more than a handful in my area alone; beyond that I found nearly 20 within 30 miles. Ranging from your local Salvation Army to specialized boutiques, there are plenty of options for the budget minded fashionistas out there. Depending on how much work you want to put into finding those unique and special finds, you’ll need to decide what kind of shop you will want to visit. Going to your local Goodwill store will often yield the better deal but will require a little more shopping panache and patience. We all love to shop ladies, but needles in haystacks are sometimes not worth the trouble. It all depends on the mood and the day, am I right?

I went on a mission to find deals at my local shops by giving myself a limit of $20.00 in each store that I visited. The following awesomeness ensued:

Visiting my local Salvation Army this past weekend, I was in a lax mood with some time to kill so I spent some time perusing the racks, looking for some interesting items that were once loved by someone else, would more than likely need some dry cleaning but would end up being a killer piece for my rocking wardrobe. My steals from Sal Val include an Isaac Mizrahi Brown Summer skirt, $2.99, a adorable no name Khaki skirt, $2.49, brand new with tags striped GAP tee $3.99 and two vintage belts with so much personality that I could not stand it, $1.99 a piece. Grand total $13.49 HOORAH! I could not believe the treats for under twenty buckaroos.

SDC10880

When looking for a great consignment shop, a great tip before heading to a shop you have never been to is to check some local reviews of the establishments. You don’t want to drive 20 minutes to what would seem like a quaint and specialized boutique and end up at an indoor yard sale. Yard sales are fine but not when you were making the special trip to what you dream will be a vintage clothes extravaganza. A great resource for this is Yelp.com, which not only can offer the search tool but a wide variety of user reviews. A prepared shopper is a successful shopper.

I actually found a consignment boutique in Newton, Ma by accident and had a little extra time to spare.  Second Appearance, offered some really nice and some really cool clothing on consignment. The gals working were super helpful, not pushy saleswomen and were just sort of chilling while you perused. They offered me information on the sales rack of clothing that needed to sell, where I found an awesome vintage poncho, yes poncho that was just too interesting to pass up at $10.00. An adorable vintage blue straw clutch/ wristlet that caught my eye and while the $18 price tag made me a little whiny and would push me over the $20 deal I had made with myself, I had fallen in love. When I brought the poncho and clutch up to pay, the owner nonchalantly marked the clutch down to $10.00 and the poncho down to $8.00. $18.00 gals, not too shabby. These are the types of lovely deals and lovely people that one can meet when shopping for a steal… and in the end? I kept under $20.00!

Mommies, this isn’t just specifically for you but also the kids as well.  Children’s boutiques,  such as the well known The Children’s Orchard, resell and also consign previously loved children’s clothing. In 22 states across the US, they offer cash for your gently used children’s clothing and offer more in the form of store credit so that you can dress your growing child in current kiddie fashions. What is not to like about that deal?

Another great tip for saving some sweet dough?! Don’t forget to donate all your previously loved items to your local good will store or Salvation Army. Not only are you giving these items for a good cause but you can also receive tax credit for your donations. Be sure to ask the associate at the stores for a donation slip to document the duds you are parting with.

There is nothing wrong with finding fashion in unlikely or unconventional places. Be proud of your finds, wear your ponchos proudly and don’t forget to pop your favorite gloss in that vintage clutch you are sporting for a summer night on the town.

Summer Hair Trends 2009- Beach Hair

Posted on: June 17, 2009 @ 7:10 am     2 Comments »

Any Girl who spends a day at the beach is pretty sure what I am talking about when I say “the perfect beach hair”. Tussled and sexy, the look is perfect for summer days and nights. Celebrities always keep this style in fashion whether they are on the go and on the red carpet. Why shouldn’t mommies keep this in their bag of tricks as well? This has been the perfect hair do for all length hair for as long as ladies have been hitting the beach. Since it doesn’t take a long time to execute, it is perfect for the wife and mom on the go. The beauty is in the simplicity.

If cost is an important factor for you and you are feeling fanciful, it is relatively simple to make a spray from scratch that re-creates the effect of a “just from the beach” hair-do. All you will need is a travel spray bottle, ½ cup of water and 1 tablespoon of sea salt. If you want to be done, you can stop here. Voila! If you so choose, from this simple mixture, you can add jasmine oil or coconut oil which will add some fragrance. Remember: a drop of oil will go a long way and you don’t want to cancel out the effects of the mixture. In addition, a dollup of your favorite gel can provide a little extra hold in this mixture as well. Many options to achieve the beachin’ goal.

For optimal effect, add to damp hair and scrunch with the mixture until you can feel your hair starting to take to the texture/ dry.

If time is of the essence for you, there are products on the market that make it even easier by just spraying damp hair and using your hands to shape the tousled waves, from roots to ends, creating an at the beach look. Heading out to work or on the town? Let your hair air dry with your windows rolled down to add volume and save time. Ranging from as little as $5.00 to upwards of $30.00, there is a product available for every change purse and for every woman.

FALL/WINTER COLLECTION at FORZIERI.COM

Jun 09

One of our new contributors, Amanda Davis, wants to share her love for hot shoe brand Faryl Robin, with all out readers today!

I am going to share with you my current love affair with Farylrobin and how I can afford it! I was recently at my local Loehman’s and was just perusing through the newest shoes…and there they were, the shoes that re-ignited my passion for footwear. They aren’t the most flamboyant shoes ever; they are just simple navy leather flats with the Farylrobin gold buckle. What is so special about them, you ask? They are not only stylish with almost every outfit I own; they are awesomely comfortable as well! I wear them with jeans, skirts, leggings and often with my pajama pants when I am bringing the dog out; I LOVE THEM that much (imagine me holding my outstretched arms as far out as possible).

So being the rabid fan of these particular shoes that I am, I had to look into where I could get more of these delicious pieces of foot art! Obviously, I searched for their website where I found their Spring ’09 collection, with some of the most beautiful shoes I think I have ever seen. My new favorite pair to pine for is the “Pop” in color Elephant, but they are a little out of my price range. Farylrobin does give the option to buy their latest and greatest from a link off their website, so if you are inline for some fashion forward footwear straight from the source, you are good to go! If you like trying your shoes on, the Farylrobin website offers a store finder, where you can locate the nearest retailer near you. Some well known retailers, such as Nordstrom, Lord and Taylor, and Macy’s, carry this brand.

But never fear discount seekers; we can get Farylrobin shoes in other places too! If discounts on shoes are what you are looking for, I found great deals on this brand and others on Bizrate.com, Shoes.com, Amazon.com, 6pm.com, DSW.com and even Overstock.com. I just picked myself up a cute pair of shoes that will be perfect for my man’s birthday picnic in MD. They are delightful, rouched heels, mostly canvas with leather backing in a tart green that they call Loden. They will compliment my new sundress divinely, I am sure of it. The Faryl Robin Misha Loden, which originally retailed for $124 (I know, I checked) came out to $42.98 with shipping on Overstock.com. This was also going for $62.10 on 6pm.com. Deals, deals abound my friends!
