Project

Have you heard of the Beauty Rebellion Project yet? If you are into cruelty-free beauty you may already be a part of this movement! What is the Beauty Rebellion movement and who’s leading it, you might ask? The Beauty Rebellion Project is a group of stylish, young conscious consumers who understand that true beauty is cruelty-free. They rebel against the traditional ideas of skin care, hair care and cosmetics and have made it their mission to spread the word about
new and established cruelty-free beauty brands through fun events and hip venues throughout Los Angeles.

Urban Decay Vegan Palette

Keeping with a cruelty-free theme, those who attend one of these hip events can expect to enjoy cocktails, vegetarian cuisine, goody bags with cruelty-free products and of course amazing support from the droves of beautiful people who support this amazing movement! The first rebellion event will be in August 2010. For the upcoming event, some of the MANY cruelty-free sponsors include: Aveda, Dermalogica, DermaDoctor, Earth Natural Essentials, InStyle, Manic Panic, Mountain Girl Soap, Naturopathica, Sibu Beauty and Urban Decay. Urban Decay is sponsoring a full-sized vegan palette for every goody bag! Many thanks to Jen Mathews (founder of the popular beauty blog, My Beauty Bunny) and The Beauty Rebellion project for bringing attention to this cause.

Bobbi Brown Denim & Rose Collection – Extreme Party Mascara in Denim Navy Blue

Extreme Party Mascara? Sounds pretty serious, doesn’t it? The new limited edition Denim color is pretty extreme, that’s for sure.

Bobbi Brown’s site says that the Extreme Party Mascara delivers extreme build, endless volume, exceptional separation and the formula is said to stay flexible, so each coat goes on as fresh as the first whether it’s immediately or hours later. It’s said to go on smooth without clumping, smudging or flaking. “Think of it as the world’s first touchup mascara.” the website says.

Sounds pretty convincing! I mean, what more could you possibly want in a mascara? That is, if you’re looking for volume and the look of false lashes.

Bobbi Brown Extreme Party Mascara

Since I’ve never tried any of Bobbi Brown’s mascara, I can’t say how it compares to past releases. However, as far as mascara goes, I’ve been pretty hooked on my own holy grail of mascara and it would take a lot to make me change brands at this point. But I was willing to give it a shot!

Avon Glazewear Lip Gloss Colors & Review

July 21st, 2010 by The Fashionable Housewife

GLAZEWEAR Lip Gloss is America’s #1 lip gloss! Avon sells the equivalent of 8 Glazewears every minute!! That’s pretty popular, huh?

Well it’s no wonder why this stuff is selling like hot cakes… It’s available in 16 high-gloss shades (including SPF 15 Clear) and four new customized finishes (Intense, Sparkle, Shine and Clear).

I was lucky enough to receive Glazewear to try out and review. I can report that this lip gloss is light and never feels sticky or heavy. It’s staying power seems to be a bit longer than most lip glosses as well. Each one has a pleasant scent and great texture. Best of all, I like the applicator brush. Some of my favorite formulas of lip gloss have horrible brushes, making me pass them by when I’m looking for lip gloss to put on. Such is not the case with Glazewear! Application is smooth and precise making this an affordable, convenient and amazing lip gloss for all year round.

With 16 amazing colors to choose from, you’ll have trouble narrowing it down to just one shade to purchase! My favorite shades ended up being Apple Cinnamon and Rave.

If you want to try Glazewear, visit AVON.com.

You can enter for a chance to win an entire set (16 tubes) of Glazewear in our Avon Glazewear Lip Gloss Giveaway!!!

(Giveaway runs from July 13 – 25, 2010)

Bobbi Brown Denim & Rose Collection – Denim Sparkle Eye Shadow Review, Photos

Another addition to the Bobbi Brown’s Denim & Rose Makeup Collection is the gorgeous Limited Edition Denim Sparkle Eye Shadow.

Bobbi’s grown-up take on glitter! This lightweight formula lights up eyes with a combination of shimmering pearls and fine glitter. Thanks to its creamy, translucent base, it glides on smoothly and won’t crease or fall onto your cheeks.

I received a sample of this eyeshadow to try out for myself and review. I’m normally not one to wear blue eyeshadow, but despite being “denim”, this actually isn’t too blue for me to wear. It looks great alone with black or gray mascara and eyeliner. It also layers well with other colors to create a beautiful smokey eye.

Bobbi Brown Limited Edition Denim Sparkle Eye Shadow

I like that Bobbi’s sparkle eye shadows are easy to use and doesn’t go everywhere. Having a nice eyeshadow brush also helps with this. I personally use and recommend Eco Tools Bamboo 6 Piece Eye Brush Set. (I haven’t had the chance to try Bobbi Brown’s makeup brushes yet.)

A great complimenting lip gloss to go with this eyeshadow is Bobbi Brown’s Raspberry Shimmer Lip Gloss.

Purchase Bobbi Brown Limited Edition Denim Sparkle Eye Shadow on BobbiBrown.com for $24. Plus you can enjoy free shipping with every $65+ order on bobbibrown.com.

Best Natural Eye Makeup Remover from Kaia Naturals – Bamboo Facial Cleansing Cloths

July 19th, 2010 by The Fashionable Housewife

Kaia Naturals Bamboo Facial Cleansing Cloths are a 4-in-1 facial cleanser, toner, makeup remover and cloth. It’s made with 100% bamboo and a biodegradable spa formula. They are wonderfully effective, even on stubborn waterproof mascara and eye makeup and ideal for even the most sensitive skin.

Kaia Bamboo Facial Cleansing Cloths are like nutrition for your skin, because they contain healthy … gentle (and luxurious) ingredients to cleanse and remove without stinging or burning your eyes. No rinsing, no sink required. Gentle makeup remover and cleansing … for even the most sensitive skin.

Avoid that tight-skin feeling as kaia has been formulated with organic Canadian honey and infused with eight pure citrus essential oils, sunflower seed and cleans impurities with oats.

Yes, kaia really does remove eye makeup and mascara… even waterproof mascara without tugging and pulling!

I use some heavy duty products to keep my makeup on like Urban Decay Primer Potion. Then I use long wearing products like MAC Pearlglide Long Wearing Eye Liner and CoverGirl LashBlast Waterproof Mascara, so when it comes time to wash my face, it can be a pain in the butt!! These wipes make removing makeup around my eyes a lot more pleasant. Scratchy wash cloths pull and tug at my skin, while these facial cleansing cloths glide over smoothly, easily removing industrial strength makeup. I love these things!!!

If you suffer from sensitive skin, you know that the ingredients found in many “wet wipes” are not ideal! The beauty of bamboo is that it is very, very soft, unlike rayon (which is what most cleansing wipes are made from, and they contain wood fibers), which can be rough and can pull on the delicate skin in the eye area or cheeks.

Kaia bamboo facial cleansing cloths are ideal for those suffering from Rosacea as the skin is fragile due to inflammation/redness and the cashmere soft cloths and gentle cleansing formula will not aggravate the skin.

Getting the most from your cleansing cloth is important as the cloths are packaged to last you an entire month of daily use. Remember to use both sides of the cloth!

  • Step 1: remove your facial makeup first
  • Step 2: then flip the cloth over and remove lipstick and eye makeup last.

The cloth is 100% biodegradable so there is no guilt when you dispose of it… And it is from a sustainable crop too!

Price: $17.99

Bobbi Brown Denim & Rose Collection – Raspberry Shimmer Lip Gloss Review, Photos

That’s the new Shimmer Lip Gloss in Raspberry ($20) – part of the Bobbi Brown Denim & Rose Collection!

I received a sample of the lip gloss to review a couple weeks ago. I love the color. It’s not as bright as I expected it to be considering it’s described as a rosy pink. I don’t think “Raspberry” was the right name for this color, because normally I would not be able to wear pink lip gloss. This seems like the perfect shade for me though… It’s like a light pinkish brown color with a nice shimmer to it.

The site says that their Shimmer Lip Gloss is non-sticky but I tend to disagree. While I normally don’t like sticky lip glosses, this one isn’t the same kind of “sticky” I usually steer clear of. It just has a thick texture, which I find helps it stay on longer than most lip glosses. I can get a few hours of wear out of this if I’m not eating or drinking.

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Lip Gloss in Raspberry

It’s a small container for the price, but I think it’s worth it if you’re looking for a longer wearing gloss with bold color and coverage. It looks great alone or layered with lipstick. It even works well on top of long lasting lip colors like Maybelline SuperStay Lip Color.

Purchase Bobbi Brown Shimmer Lip Gloss on BobbiBrown.com for $20. Plus you can enjoy free shipping with every $65+ order on bobbibrown.com.

CHINA GLAZE GOES RETRO GLAM FOR FALL 2010 COLLECTION

Sultry Fall Colors Entice The Fashionable Palette

For Fall 2010, the China Glaze Vintage Vixen Collection captures the vivid and saturated hues of the 1940’s with this seductively complex palette. These classic shades of the season recreate the timeless tableau of movie land mystique, perfect red pouts and steamy nights where swing was the scene!

As you can probably tell from our logo, we kinda like the whole 40′s style thing. This collection is no exception! It is probably my favorite China Glaze nail polish collection to date.

These multi-faceted jewel tones, rich reds, titillating taupes and smoldering sands are amazing. This collection deliverers a high octane 40’s era glamour with a sophisticated edge! I’ll be wearing these color for a long time…

The 12 colors in this collection include:

    * Riveter Rouge – Deep red shimmer
    * Foxy – Burgundy frost with shimmer
    * Goin’ My Way – Brown frost with copper shimmer
    * Classic Camel – Khaki crème with gold micro glitter
    * Swing Baby – Taupe frost with silver micro glitter
    * Ingrid – “Greige” crème with copper micro glitter
    * Hey Doll – Rose frost with shimmer
    * Bogie – Plum frost with shimmer
    * First Class Tocket – Deep purple frost with shimmer
    * Midnight Mission – Navy blue frost with silver micro glitter
    * Emerald Fitzgerald – Turquoise green frost with shimmer
    * Jitterbug – Grey chrome with silver micro glitter

I haven’t had a chance to try out the colors yet, although the entire collection is sitting here on my desk, calling my name. I can’t decide which color to try first! I promise I’ll post some swatches soon so you can see how gorgeous they are.

The China Glaze Vintage Vixen collection started shipping June 6th internationally and July 6th, 2010 domestically. All 12 colors will be available as open stock, in 6 piece box collections, a 12 piece counter display and a 36 piece rack. I’ll post links of where to purchase this collection online as soon as I find an online retailer carrying the collection!

As always, China Glaze is free of DBP, toluene, and added formaldehyde.

The featured product for this post was provided to me, at no cost, by the manufacturer or representing PR agency for the sole purpose of product testing and review. Opinions expressed are my own and are not influenced by monetary compensation.

UPDATE: In Search of a New Nail Color

July 6th, 2010 by Lucie Amberg

A few months ago, I wrote about my quest for a new nail color.  I’d been stuck in a red rut for years, and while I’ll always love that classic, glamour-girl shade, I really wanted to branch out.  Fabulous TFH readers gave me some great suggestions, which solidifed my resolve to try something new.

For some reason, though, experimenting with a new nail color intimidated me.  Luckily, the OPI website has an awesome feature called “Try On This Color” that allows you to customize an image of a hand with your nail length and skin color and then check out different polishes.  Just playing around on it restored my sense of fun re: manicures.  I had definitely been taking it too seriously.

Next I dragged my Mister into Sephora, where he waited patiently while I pored over every last color in the SEPHORA by OPI Nail Colour Collection.  Ultimately I settled on a medium purple, Don’t Go There.

I love this shade.  I wore it on fingers and toes for a solid two months with great success.  It’s such a seductive, feminine, unusual color, and I got about a bizillion compliments on it– even from manicurists.

Don’t Go There is also versatile.  It never looked out of place or distracting with anything I wore, and I would recommend it to almost anyone.  It’s a sassy enough color to warrant its own post in the Sephora blog, which is where the above photo came from.

Purchase SEPHORA by OPI Nail Colour Don’t Go There for $9 on Sephora.com

***

With that success under my belt, I went for a bolder shade: SEPHORA by OPI’s Queen of Everything.  Like so much of the SEPHORA by OPI collection, it’s truly unique- primarily silver but with a whisper of gold undertones.

Undoubtedly, this was a bigger risk than Don’t Go There.  Since I only used it on my toes, the effect was somewhat understated.  Regardless, it’s just a polarizing shade.  My husband actually called it “Mr. Roboto,” though he wisely revised that to “Sexy Terminator.”  So I didn’t get as many compliments, but I still like it and think it would look sizzling hot if I had a good tan.  Or were on a Mexican vacation, which is an excellent idea for multiple reasons.

***

This week, though, I even shocked myself by walking into the nail salon and picking a color off the wall.  I have always wanted to be the carefree woman who does that, but since I’m pretty purposeful about my style, it hadn’t ever happened before.  I chose OPI’s Shrek-inspired What’s with the Cattitude?.

Keeping it real, I probably wouldn’t have chosen it if I’d looked at the name.  That’s because:

  • I don’t care for cats.
  • I’m not into Shrek.
  • I don’t like cartoon-related beauty products in general.

I hate to admit that the name has such an influence on me, but it’s true.  However, it’s a good thing I missed the unappealing name because it’s quite a lovely robin’s egg color.  If classic girly pink polish could be blue instead, it would be this color.  It’s very different for me, but so far I’m loving it.

Summer fashions allow for a breezier approach, which has been a good thing to remember.  I spent ages looking for the perfect non-red polish, which kept me from ever trying anything.  Since I took ”perfect” out of the equation, I’ve had a lot more fun.  After all, like most women I rarely feel I have much room for error.  Pedicures, at the very least, can be perfectionism-free…
