Fashionable Read: “Nothing to Wear” by Jesse Garza and Joe Lupo

If the front door of our fashion is our “stepping out” look on a day to day basis, then our “back door” is our organization, our closet, our efforts that go into looking and feeling good. For me, my closet is at the center of my back door to my fashion. My brainstorming goes on here, my organization goes on here, my new stuff comes in and my old stuff goes out. All from this small room in my house. To me the “back door” of our fashion is very important. It lays the groundwork of how we will look everyday and for me that often equates to my feelings about myself as well.

Co-author of “Nothing to Wear” is a contributor to a great article, “Shop Your Closet” in the October 2008 issue of Real Simple magazine. The article highlights a makeover and “shop” of three women’s closets to reinvent what they have and weed out what they don’t need.

I know for me personally, I am an out with the old in with the new type of person. My closet will only hold so much, there are only so many days in a week or year and if there is something I am not wearing it drags me down. Lupo had great suggestions in this article about that situation exactly. He had a simple methodology for deciding if it was time to go for certain items in your closet. He would simply ask “‘Do you love it? Is it flattering? Is it you?’ If it failed one of those three questions, it was a goner.” I always like to think of it this way… if I am getting rid of four or five pieces (consigment/ebay/garage sale/charity) I can pretty much justify the purchase of a couple to take their place. So purging is earning!!!

How does your closet affect your fashion?
