Maternity Maxi Dresses

Posted By: Lucie Amberg on July 14, 2009 at 7:00 am

Everyone knows that those last few months of pregnancy can be uncomfortable, especially now as we’re entering the dog days of summer. In a mean twist of fate, it’s also the hardest time to pull together a cute look.

Fortunately, maternity wear has really improved since the days of paneled pants and shapeless tunics, and a plus sign on a pregnancy test no longer sentences you to months of frumpiness. But with some savvy shopping, you can also find chic non-maternity styles, ones you might even wear after Baby’s arrival.

One of summer’s hottest trends, the Maxi Dress, easily adapts to your new shape. As a bonus, your extra curves actually make it look better! Just check out designer Jennifer Meyer (Tobey Maguire’s wife) sporting a cool maxi from Gypsy 05.

Thicker straps make this one a winner, allowing her to wear a plunging neckline without sacrificing a supportive bra.  Here’s some ways to steal this look, all under $35:

Old Navy hits two trends, maxi dress and ombre, with this $34.50 dress.

And I found two, great options at Target for under $30 a piece!  There’s the smocked maxi in Midnight Iris.

And in Cool Sky.

Worried about guessing the size?  Thanks to the maxi’s unstructured appeal, you should be comfortable in the size that’s recommended for your current bust measurement.  As always when you’re pregnant, if you measure between sizes, go with the larger of the two.
