Fall 2009 Trend Alert: Matte Nail Polish
The biggest nail polish trend for Fall 2009 is matte. Myself, I’m a high gloss type of gal, but many top brands such as OPI and Zoya are releasing matte collection for Fall.
As you can see above, that’s Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs wearing KO Knockout Nail Polish in Flatte Black. While I think matte nail polish looks pretty cool on her, I’m not so sure I rock this trend. I love nail polish as much as the next girl, but I only have so many fingers. I don’t want to run out and buy a bunch of matte nail polish only to find out that I hate the look of it or have it go out of style before the snow flies.

Simple solution? Essie Matte About You Matte Finisher
, a matte topcoat you can use over any nail polish to instantly obtain a matte finish.
This fab topcoat allows you to wear any of the gorgeous colors you already have and love, and make them instantly matte! Matte About You uses the same salon-proven, long-lasting durability as all Essie products, so you can rest assured your manicure will last more than 1 day. Simply apply the matte topcoat over any nail polish for the perfect no-luster finish that is all the rage for Fall 2009. And remember that Essie polish contains no formaldehyde, no toluene and no DBP.
“A matte finish is very fashion-forward,” explains Essie Weingarten, founder and president of Essie Cosmetics. “We developed Matte About You so you can still wear the colors you love – classics and hot-right-now – but with a striking matte finish. A totally unique approach to wearing color.”
Although it isn’t officially released yet, I found it for sale already on Amazon.com for $10.00 as well as on BeautySak.com for only $8.00. Matte About You is currently backordered on Apothica.com
.
Matte About You will be available at www.essie.com and beauty destinations nationwide in August 2009 and will retail for $10.00. (But sometimes you can get it cheaper!)
For more information on this trend, check out the article in the LA Times and on Allure.com.

Hmmm…don’t think I like it. It reminds me of when I’ve kept mypolish on too long and it wears down…maybe another color would look better, but doubtful it would look good!

Yeah that was my line of thought too… Week old nail polish that has dulled down from doing dishes etc… Sort of an unkempt look I think. Doesn’t that almost defeat the purpose of nail polish?! POLISH!
lol

I’m very unsure about this… I do like the matte nail polish, but I agree that the main point would be look like your nails are POLISHED. hehe And I do agree with both you girls line of thoughts. But I guess I like it.
Let’s see how this one is going to turn out… mmmm…

You know, I’m right there with you. I’m a high-gloss kind of gal too, and the matte look just doesn’t appeal to me at all…but let’s face it, there are a lot of things in “fashion trends” that don’t appeal to me….LOL!

I’m thinking it might be a cool trend, particularly for the fall and winter months. Think of the look and texture of velvet.

I think the right shade of matte polish (maybe a rich milk-chocolate or deep velvety burgundy, or for winter, navy), paired with a perfect short, clean manicure, could look very chic.
It’s definitely a “trend” look and not a classic one, but I like the raw-yet-luxe feel of it… I reckon it’ll be picked up by fans of designers who tend toward more deconstructed, edgier looks. “Unfinished finished”. It’ll be interesting to see if it catches on in the mainstream

I love the matte finishes. What looks good on me are: fabrics with some texture, heathery colors, and matte nail polishes. My coloring is low-contrast between the lightest and darkest colors on my body, my skin is heavily freckled. I have the matte nail polish top coat and use it on all my nail polish colors and they look so much better. (Really, nothing about me is smooth or shiny or a solid color so it makes sense the matte finish looks best on me.) While the matte nail polish finish may be a trend, it certainly is a good look for my own complexion and clothing.
