Skirts

Here is a quick lesson on some fashion do’s and don’ts when it comes to skirts.

  • If you are short and you own floor length skirts, throw them away! When you are short and you cover up your legs, it only makes you look shorter. Keep your skirts at or right above knee to add visual inches to your length.
  • If you are tall, (or over 35) don’t wear mini skirts! You want to wear skirts that hit the knee are best for you. Anything longer or shorter will just accentuate your height. You want to look balanced.
  • If you are large around the middle, blousy or loose fitting skirts will only make your middle look bigger. (Again, not hiding it!) Straight lines and structured fits are more flattering and will draw attention away from your middle. A “pencil” or “A-line” skirt will look best on you.
  • Examples:

    Pencil Skirt
Fitted around the waist and straight line to the knee

    A-line Skirt
Fitted around the waist and flares at the knee

  • If you have an average build, you can get away with a lot of things. Big prints on skirts can be flattering if done correctly. Be careful not to let the prints overwhelm and swallow you whole. You can pull this look off simply by pairing the skirt with solid colors. Wear a solid color shirt or blouse in a neutral tone rather than a bright color. The bright colors on top can make your outfit look like a circus. Keep it simple. Wear classic shoes and small, delicate jewelry. If you wear big prints on your skirt, you need to tone everything else down a notch or two.
  • Example:

    A-line large printed skirt

  • The best thing to pair that skirt with would be a white or beige top with white or brown shoes. Accessorize with a delicate bracelet in either gold or one of the colors in the skirt. Tie the whole outfit together with a small handbag in either beige, white, or brown.
