Simply Smooth Brazilian Keratin Treatment Review – Straighten and Smooth Hair – Part 1

Peggy Loughlin

Yesterday, I got the Simply Smooth Brazilian Keratin Treatment from Peggy Loughlin, Master Hair Designer & Colorist, at Cassandra Salon and Spa in Nashua, NH.

The process took a little over 31/2 hours from start to finish. She started by shampooing my hair 4 times with Simply Smooth Pre-Clean Purifying Shampoo to strip all the dirt, conditioner build-up, etc off the hair. She then lightly towel dried my hair and went to work combing it out and then applying special Brazilian Keratin Treatment to my hair with a brush that looked just like a standard 8″ brush for applying hair color dye. This part of the process took about an hour.

When the treatment was completely distributed on every single strand of hair, she put my hair in a clip, put a bag over my hair and put me under the heat dryer chair for about 15 minutes. After that, she took my hair out and started the process of blow drying it straight with a brush on a very high heat setting. This part of the process took about an hour.

Once my hair was finally dried (I have very thick hair and it takes forever to dry!) she began the process of straightening my hair and sealing on the treatment with a very hot flat iron. She did VERY small sections of hair at a time and went over it several times to make sure the treatment was sealed onto each strand of hair. This part of the process took about an hour.

Then I was all done! This was the end result after all her hard work…

I was so surprised that it really took the perm out!

Before I left, Peggy gave me instructions to not to put my hair up in a scrunchy, elastic, clip or anything for as long as possible, but a minimum of 4 days. You also can not wash your hair or get it wet for 4 days afterwards. This ensures that the treatment will fully settle into your hair and bond with it more permanently.

It’s highly recommended that you use the Simple Smooth shampoo & condition with Keratin in it to make sure you make the treatment last as long as possible. Simply Smooth products use the highest quality, purest keratin derived from botanicals and human hair. Using two type of quality keratin increases the performance of the treatment. The formula is also enriched with vitamins from plants, apple pulp, and vanilla. The Simply Smooth formula is gentle enough to allow for coloring and highlighting on the same day, and it will not alter lighter shades of color-treated hair.

Here’s some more pics of my hair after the treatment…

And here is what my hair looked like the day after I got my perm in November 2009…

No, I don’t color my hair. That’s my natural color. The picture of the perm, is the most accurate to show my true color. The Brazilian Keratin Treatment is still in my hair in the above pictures and I think it made my hair appear more dull and darker in the pictures. Those pictures were also taken with a different camera…

I loved my hair curly and would have gotten it re-permed, but it’s inadvisable to get a perm (or any chemical hair treatments) while pregnant. My doctor said no way because of the chemicals and the salon said no way because the protein in your hair changes while you pregnant, plus your hair grows faster, and hair in most cases will not perm while you’re pregnant.

Since I didn’t want to be left to let my perm grow out for the next 6 months, I opted to try this treatment to take out my perm so I wouldn’t have to deal with a bad hair day from now until August. It’s safe, chemical free and promised to make my hair beautiful and manageable.

At first, the price scared me… a lot… but I heard so many happy reviews from other women who got the same treatment, that I decided to go for it anyway. And fore-go shopping for at least a month to be able to afford it…

It hasn’t even been 24 hours since I got the treatment so I can’t tell you from experience how long it will last, if it “really worked”, or anything like that.

Overall, the experience was very positive. It really didn’t seem like 31/2 and I was never left wondering why it was taking so long or when it was going to be over. Peggy was wonderful to talk to during the treatment and it made time fly by.

I mainly just wanted to document the experience thus far and answer some common questions…

Questions and Answers

Q: How long did it take?
A: About 3 1/2 hours (Average is 1-3 hours depending on the density and length of hair)

Q: How much did it cost?
A: My salon charges by the hour for this – $125/hr. My total came to $320 plus tip, plus products = $456 (OUCH!!!)

Q: How long does it last?
A: It’s supposed to last approximately 16 weeks (4 months) with the proper care.

Q: Does it work on curly hair or does hair have to be straight??
A: I had a perm in November and it seems to have worked great so far on mine!

Q: Is it like a perm?
A: NO! The Simply Smooth treatment is formaldehyde and chemical free smoothing treatment relaxes and revitalizes hair. It’s safer than traditional straightening treatments, but also isn’t as permanent.

    Q: Is it safe?
A: Yes! This process does not chemically alter the hair and repairs damaged hair leaving it shiny and full of body.

If you have any other questions, please leave a comment and let me know!!!

Wondering how the treatment held up after a few months?

Your hair looks fab, doll… and it’s going to be perfect for that humid Florida weather!

My process took far less time and I didn’t have to wait four days to put my hair into a ponytail, but it’s only supposed to last 8 weeks. We should do a dual update to see how it looks a month after treatment!

wow I’m so curious…what did you use? It only lasts 8 weeks but must have less chemicals right? What did you use?

I love your hair cut! It looks absolutely fabulous!

  3. Laney says:

What a neat treatment and such beautiful results! I’m thinking about growing my hair out and if I do I’ll seriously contemplate getting this to calm the hot mess that will inevitably occur!

The fashionable husband here, the difference between the perm and non-perm pics is the type of lighting used. The perm pic uses incandescent lighting while the new pics use fluorescent, which tends to make reds look dull.

  5. Caitlyn says:

I thought u can’t do the keratin treatment while preggers?

  6. Caitlyn, I consulted several salon specialist as well as my doctor to confirm that the Simply Smooth Brazilian Keratin Treatment is indeed safe for pregnant women.

There are no chemicals, no formaldehyde, and no fumes. It’s safer than coloring your hair.

    • Lisa says:

how does this stuff work? of there’s no harsh chemicals…I thought it had to have something close to formaldehyde in order to smooth the hair? Does anyone know whats in this?

  7. Peggy Gorman says:

I love the way your hair came out, your beautiful!

I can’t even imagine how long my hair would take and what it would cost. I have naturally curly hair like the models, and it is very thick and down to my waist. Its so thick I can’t even get an elastic around it and have to exclusively use combs.

  9. If your hair is naturally very curly, the Brazilian Keratin treatment will not completely straighten your hair. It may relax the curls and make the texture of your hair much more manageable, but you’ll probably end up with waxy hair at best.

For naturally curly hair, I would recommend getting it chemically straightened if you want straight hair. If you want to make your hair more manageable, give it body and make it healthy, then this treatment might be right for you.

Sounds like it may take up to 6 hours to do your hair though! It sounds like you have gorgeous hair though and I wouldn’t change it!!!

Just to clarify, this product SIMPLY SMOOTH, advertises their product as hThat implies it is totally safe and natural, yet it is not. It contains vanillin is an aldehyde and when heated has the same irritating vapors as formalin and formaldehyde. There are other products like the Coppola who also advertise “formaldehyde free”, but again it contains aldehyde.

    • Karen says:

Thank you for that post … I had the Simply Smooth Treatment and had a terrible reaction. My hair looked great, but when I went into the hot summer sun (same day as treatment) and began to sweat from my scalp, I experienced a vertigo like reaction with severe nausea and vomiting. I could not walk straight or even keep my eyes open. My doctor asked me what medications I was taking…or what I had done that day. When I explained to him that it was a hair treatment, he instructed me to get into a shower and get it out of my hair. It must have entered into my blood stream when I started to sweat. He said that there must be a chemical that reacted badly in my system … similar to formaldehyde. As soon as I got the product out of my hair, I was back to normal. Curly, a bit frizzy … but thankfully not dizzy and sick. I’ll stick to my naturally curly hair, thank you!!! It is NOT safe. Please clarify that statement.

    • nikki says:

I guess you shouldn’t eat hershey kisses or bake those chocolate chip cookies because most hershey chocolate contains….VANILLIN.

There are different types of aldehydes. Industrial types, i.e. formaldehyde, isn’t meant to be heated up. Then you have your aldehydes that are in your baking goods that are meant to be heated up. The Simply Smooth Line contains the same ingredient in Hershey chocolate.

They offer a great product and a wonderful treatment. Next time do all your research before you post.

  14. Adina says:

So, it has almost been a month and what do you think? Do you like the new do? Can you see the difference between your old perm and the new Simply Smooth hair? I’m thinking of having this done (scheduled for next week) and have my hair chemically straightened right now (love it).

Any insight would be helpful and greatly appreciated!

I called Simply Smooth and they said it’s not for pregnant women. Did they tell you it was OK, or just your salon?

I found an article about it by googling “brazilian keratin treatment while pregnant” and I see u don’t allow links coz of spam so I’m not linking it but I’m kinda worred about YOU!! They said some salons lie to get ur business or don’t know any better. Scary

They showed Simply Smooth ingredients to and it’s defnitely not chemical free! Like Fona said!

Ladies if ur preg like me, DON’T do it, just deal with ur frizz for a few more months. Googgle to find that article it has lots of info.

    • Natalie says:

Yes, if you are preg you should not do this treatment. There hasnot been enough testing to say it is safe. So why take that chance. The company does not want you doing this treatment on anyone pregnant either.
Don’t do it. I am a licensed cometologist and will not perform this on anyone pregnant.

  17. Birdie Miller says:

Does this product work on Black hair that is untreated and naturally kinky?

  18. Bella says:

I have to say I agree with this “Caitlyn” Girl…I am educated in the product and Own my own salon in the boston area and WILL NOT offer this service on anyone who is pregant..Just last saturday I had to turn a pregnent women down who wanted the service done because i was “told” by my educator that its not ethical to perform this product on someone who is with child. Though it is an “all natural” product pregnant womens hormones are all over the place and that can effect the results…SO you know there are other alternatives…Simply smooth makes whats called an “after color lock”…(though you dont have to get a color to recieve this service) …ask your stylist. Its a 4 week “mini” keratin treatmeant that IS SAFE for pregnant women…and i got the go ahead from a simply smooth educator herself that it is allowed!

Im insured under the simply smooth company and if anything were to happen to your child your salon could have been at risk…So in my opinion they took a big chance doing the 3 hour Keratin treatment on you! But if you asked your doctor I find some comfort in that! Just like some doctors dont recommend coloring your hair while prego…Others say after the first trimestor its fine! But for those who just dont wanna try the big one but are dealing with unmanagable hair right now..

Try the mini one! Its Fabulous and should be around $75 depending on where you live. It should only takes about 45 minutes for your hairdresser to do it and you only have to leave it in for 24 hours!!! You however do have to use the shampoo and cond which is around $50 to buy!

Its also used to lengthen the results of the “big” keratin treatment…So for miss fashionable housewife…you should do that in between your next big treatment once you start to feel like the keratin is rinsing out a bit!

    Enjoy!

  19. Rachel says:

Your hair looks great! I am considering a keratin treatment and have been doing some research on the chemicals. I think there are some treatments like Coppola and Global Keratin that have formaldehyde free versions. Anyways I found this video which shows the steps they use to get your hair straight. It is definitely an interesting process. http://mystylebell.com/2008/01/22/thinking-of-getting-a-keratin-hair-treatment/

  20. Cathy says:

I recently had the Simply Smooth Keratin treatment done. What is the minimum amount of time I must wait to have a color treatment?
