Add a Little Silk to Your Style

For those of you who have never tried to wear silk before, I know it can be a bit daunting… especially when you start out by looking at their care directions (it’s a pain buying dry clean only clothing) or are concerned by how it looks on your figure. I disagree. While you do need to dry clean it (and sadly, I can’t help you with that one), this work-friendly and fashionable fabric is a great way to add some flair to your ho-hum wardrobe.

1. The Silk Dress: What I love about this item is how it’s sexy and slinky without being revealing or slutty. Plus, one of the best parts of silk is how you can add amazing patterns and designs within the fabric, like Corey Lynn Calter’s Lianne Ruched Dress (on sale for $129.99, The Trend Boutique). This dress is fabulous for spring parties.

2. The Silk Blouse: Great paired with a suit or fitted pencil skirt for those days when sweatpants don’t even come close to cutting it, the silk blouse is a great go-to piece, especially in the hotter days of summer. I love the look and style of the Kate Spade Silk Organza Ruth Blouse ($275, katespade.com), particularly paired with a dark gray pencil dress and slingback heels.

3. Silk Scarves: For those of you who are still a little skittish about adding silk into your wardrobe, an attractive (and affordable!) silk scarf is a must-have. Check out this Polka Dot Silk Blended Scarf ($12.50, OldNavy.com). While it’s not 100% silk,  it gives you two different bonuses; first, it’s hand wash (not dry clean!) and second, it gives you the affordability that high-quality pure silk can’t.

And for a little silk trivia: did you know it takes about 5000 silkworms to make a pure silk kimono? Now you know!

Actually most silk can be hand washed without issue. Overuse of dry cleaning is not good for the environment!

I wash mine on gentle and don’t dry, air fluff.
